Cheddar Gorgeous: Pic of the Week

Two of PH's favourites in one of our favourite places - get downloading now!

You'll have to excuse something a bit more artsy from POTW this Friday, but we thought it made a nice change from a regular static, a detail shot or - heaven forbid - something going sideways.

Peer closely enough and you'll see that this Cheddar Gorge shot features a pair of lightweight legends: a Renaultsport Megane R26.R and an Ariel Nomad. Why? Largely because they're both simply brilliant cars, but there was a specific purpose in mind too.

You may have noticed an Autocar feature in 2017 that outlined its top 100 used cars, using the PH classifieds to help you find them. Naturally the 10 per cent dedicated to lightweight specials held considerable appeal for us and, with pictures like this accompanying the feature, perhaps we should have snapped up the shots much sooner.

Still, better late than ever and all that, which is probably what you would have to sheepishly utter when returning one of these cars. Because you're not going to be early. So while the Ariel and the Renault are very different in execution, the concept is very similar: minimum frills to create maximum thrills. With our most ambitious hats on, we'd say this picture encapsulates the boundless freedom and tremendous fun of driving two such pared back automobiles. Or it's just a really cool pic of some lovely scenery that will look great on a big display - up to you!

Fantastic choice and great shot!

I have a client in Chewton Mendip which means I *have* to go up through Cheddar Gorge. Always a joy!

Unless it's straightened out a bit, the car parks have closed, the rocks have stopped falling and the dawdlers eradicated, Cheddar Gorge is far from an enjoyable drive; there are far better routes along the top of the Mendips - you can't even see that much of the gorge from inside a car with a roof.

All IMHO of course.

Don't forget the goats who have absolutely no compunction about standing in the road on a blind bend !

I live in the mendips and managed to squeeze in a jaunt down the gorge on Xmas day morning at 6:30. Pretty much any other time is rammed...

Hmm, canyon driving? Be very wary of oncoming trucks!

You won't see many trucks in Cheddar Gorge. A coach occasionally or the odd 7.5 tonner but nothing bigger.

Just need to go on the right day or time of day. Had many an uninterrupted run from bottom to top both in car and on bike. Despatching dawdlers and bloody cyclists is easier on the bike though! 30mph speed limit has been extended aswell now. Think some of the tighter corners are needed just to bring the speed down a notch or two occasionally!

I do occasionally go there (not too far from home) and enjoy a nice drive, but in the height of summer, forget it. Far to busy.

Blimey! I cycled up it a couple of years ago en route to picking up a new car - nearly killed me!

Had a lovely drive around it this evening. 5:30pm and not a soul on my side of the road starting from that junction by the Cheddar Gorge sign, all the way into town and then back to the Green Ore junction. Bliss.
