Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo: Geneva 2018

Electric SUVs are all the rage at Geneva - which means that Porsche needs one too

Not to be outdone by Jaguar, Porsche has unveiled the all-electric Mission E Cross Turismo at Geneva - an estate-shaped all-wheel-drive show car which is apparently "a serious prospect for production".

That's according to Porsche CEO Oliver Blume who explained to the assembled horde that Porsche's surprise reveal - shown alongside the new 911 GT3 RS - was based on the previous Mission E concept, but "mixed everyday usability with off-road adventure."

What does that mean exactly? Well, the manufacturer describes the model as a Cross-Utility Vehicle (its first) and claims a 310 mile range from its floor-mounted batteries - not to mention a charging system that is not only ready for an 800-volt fast charging network, but also charging via induction.

Like the Mission E, its powertrain is based on two synchronous electric motors which provide it with a "system output of over 600hp" and a 0-62mph time of less than 3.5 seconds. It'll also do 0-155mph in less than 12 seconds.

It's capable of Porsche Torque Vectoring, too, and gets adaptive air suspension which allows an increased ground clearance of up to 50mm. Naturally it gets a larger boot than the Mission E - all the better for filling with your outdoor pursuit equipment.

Of course this is all rather the point, and all the better for competing with the I-PACE which will also receive its international debut at the show. Or prospectively competing with it at any rate: the Jaguar is destined for imminient production - and sale later this year. Despite Porsche's protestations, the Mission E Cross Turismo is not.

"offroad adventure"

Yeah...of course
All the Green Laning clubs are massively over subscribed and you can't drive past a field or through a forest and not see all these people adventuring these days can you....

... utterly bizzare niche creation at it's finest.

Some twonk in the marketing department probably thought, st we haven't filled the EV SUV sub niche. Bugger there's only €50 left in the budget too. I know, get engineering to jack it up, put some chunky tyres on it and cover it with Tupperware. After all it worked a treat on the Rover Streetwise...

0-155mph in under 12 secs - 'kin 'ell.

I predict near future humans will have necks like F1 drivers!

I like it too...but then already have name down for a Mission E so clearly I’ve got issues!

We run an S Diesel Cayenne currently as our family car, looked at buying a hybrid but because we a) don’t live in London b) it’s not tax efficient and c) do big mileage the Hybrid just didn’t make sense for us. An electric car with a genuinely useful range would make a lot of sense for the family car.

I like it.

I like the mission- E too.

Strangely, I find these more interesting than turbo'd base 911s or 4 pot caysters.

(disclosure, I own an old but watercooled 911 so my opinion is heavily biased)

If you haven't watched the official video on the car I'd urge you to do so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa5F1cWLnRg

From that video it seems like Porsche want to sell (or more likely lease) you the car as part of an entire lifestyle experience. Utter wkery.

However the tech of the car does look interesting, and will be great when it filters down to the rest of the VAG range.

Did they crash it on the way into the show or is the front supposed to look like that?

I had a good look at this yesterday and have to say that it looked thoroughly grim and half arsed. Geneva was an interesting show this year and there were fascinating designs across all sorts of manufacturers. Porsche seemed a bit muted and this was very poorly resolved and rather shoddy in the flesh.

I loved the mission e concept but this...well I'm not a fan of porsche (and others) selling diesel 4x4s etc and this is all a bit meh.

It seems that Porsche is just turning into a VW branding exercise and is the choice for those that think Audi is a bit lowbrow.

But, its electric I hear you cry. But it isn't. It is yet more vapour.

This is the company that dominated LMP1 and yet here we are with a couple of pretty poor hybrids and no firm date for a full EV to come out.

It all seems a bit trite and half arsed as if they know that the PCP brand slaves will lap it up when/if they get round to it.

Meanwhile over at Tesla.....

Is there a point where perhaps performance exceeds the abilities of the typical driver ?

The drone is the most cringeworthy of all the crap shown in that video. So the rich snob can film himself driving his 600hp vacuum cleaner to the hilltop resort.
