New Brabham BT62 lives!

The devil makes work for idling engines, as new Brabham car is confirmed

Sir Jack Brabham's place in motorsport history is of course securely cemented. A three-time world champion, he claimed the first of those victories on foot, having pushed his Cooper-Climax over the line having run out of fuel agonisingly close. A second title followed one year later but it was the third which is arguably the most significant, coming as it did in a car bearing his own name, a feat never achieved before or since.

It's not hard, then, to see why the time seems right for the Brabham name to make a comeback. From the Fiat Seicento Schumacher, to the Ascari A10, to the McLaren Senna (double points for that one) manufacturers have been harnessing the celebrity of racing's stars for years.

This case is a little different, however, given that the man behind the car you hear below is in fact David Brabham, son of Sir Jack and himself a former F1 driver and Le Mans winner. Having declared last year that he wanted "to see the name back on track" a new car, named the BT62, is apparently close to reveal, having already undergone a "rigorous and extensive engineering programme".

Brabham Jnr continued, "With more than 700 racing cars produced since its inception in the 1960s, the Brabham marque boasts a remarkable heritage, so to see the first Brabham in 26 years wear the iconic BT designation will be a huge moment in our history."

Mark your calendars for May 2nd, then, the date on which the Braham name will once again adorn a motorcar.*

*Let's all agree not to mention the Brabham Torana...

Suspect the "62" refers to 6.2 - sounds like a GM LS block.

Or perhaps it's just sequential numbering?

BT60 was the 1991/2 F1 car
BT61 was a stillborn 1993 F1 car
<tumbleweed until now>

Well! i'm curious.
I mean, if the last thing ever built under the name was an F1 car, whatever this thing is has to make sense against that background.

So they're releasing a car that sounds like a canal boat? Er, great?
