G96 box disintegrated - repair options

I have a 1998 Porsche 911. Apologies if this offends. I've seen a lot of knowledgeable chatter about the G96 box in this section of the forum as I believe you use them or can use them in your cars. So mine has recently disintegrated. My chosen Porsche garage tell me the selector fork bolt has snapped off and lots of debris in the oil and appears that the crown wheel and pinion have destroyed themselves hence locking up when reversing and not going into 1st. Pics below.

They say it is not economical to rebuild so suggest a second hand unit.

Is there anyone in uk or further afield who could repair my box or supply me a better replacement than just one off another old car like mine?

I'm anxious that any second hand unit will be 20 years old like mine. There is one on eBay now for £2700 and I've also found a G96.01 in Germany for EUR 2500 which might fit but isn't identical.

I'm just wandering if you guys agree begore i toss 4 grand at an unknown 2nd hand box plus fitting and what not?

They did my rebuild and fitted the WaveTec diff for me.

It is likely you will find that the repair will be very expensive due to the cost of the components. Most manufacturers charge 5 to 10 times the price fro each component over what the original manufacturing cost when the car was new. Porsche are no different and start expensive for components that are only just up to the job (cost and weight saving).

All these old boxes are painfully expensive to repair/refurbish. The problem with buying second hand, unless you get it warranted, is it could be about to be as knackered as the one you’re replacing. I bought a box that had apparently been refreshed and it still needed 4K+ on it to replace worn parts...

I think Storer’s and Graham’s recommendations are good as you’ll get a very objective view from Mike.

I used CMS for both my first cars G50 and the new GTRs gt2 box. I find their prices to be within what I would excpect for this kind of service. I will add that I would much rather rebuild a 20 year old box then trust a used box of this age with no way to verify its condition. If I spent 5 or 6k on a rebuild, to me that's a much better value then 4k on a used box. Lee

Thanks Lee, I guess I was thinking from a UK centric point of view; thinking about the costs a decent crate, costs of transport and the subsequent import taxes etc on return...

Can't see the words new or brand new.

Replacement is the word I see.

Before anyone parts with cash I'd ask for certain that they are Brand New.


There is a BIG difference between replacement and NEW!

I believe you can get a new box from Porsche for £7,102.93 +vat with a warranty.

I was told those transaxles are new not rebuilt, Porsche started making new ones again.

I make that 5,578.73 gbp and it says thats with lsd or m220.

Whilst the new 'box sounds like a good option be aware that the mentioned warranty will likely only apply if the box is fitted to a Porsche.

At that price I'd have thought a full re-build would become a rather costly route.

So Turbo boxes are still a considerable outlay £12k - £18k. Back to rebuilding then.................

Have you considered talking to the Ultima Factory. They usually have a stock of assorted boxes they can supply.
