Porsche 919 Evo: Pic of the Week

There was only ever going to be one thing on our desktop backgrounds this week...

We make no apologies for returning to the Porsche 919 Evo here. Its ferocious lap of Spa-Francorchamps came perilously close to diverting our attention from the all-new Aston Martin Vantage - and that's saying something.

If the detail has passed you by, fear not. The Evo is basically a 919 with all the tedious rules governing the LMP1-H catergory gleefully broken. Consequently its turbocharged V4 engine now delivers 720hp and its electric motor, 440hp. Together, that equals a lot - but just to be sure, Porsche subtracted an additional 40kg from the car's already feathery kerbweight and fettle the aerodynamic package to deliver a 53 per cent increase in downforce.

The results are plain to see if you look back at the trackside video (which you definitely should). Naturally, Pic of the Week is taken from the same event, and snapped by Porsche. It's unlikely to end there either. Next month the manufacturer will take the Evo to the Nurburgring and have it ingest the Nordschleife. The target, surely, will be the six-minute mark. And immortality.

If it gets a good run at the ‘Ring, the time could be nearer five minutes than six.

The Martini Porsche did a 2’05” at Spa in 1983 to qualify on pole, so the recent 919 1’41” on substantially the same track is 20% faster.

20% faster than 6’11 starts with a 4... redface
