Brabus tweaks Mercedes X-Class

It must now be using a huge V12 then, right? Don't be so sure...

In the 40 years that Brabus has been tuning various Mercedes, about the only thing it hasn't tinkered with is a pick up. Now, with the X-Class in the Benz line up, Brabus finally has its opportunity. Yet the end result is pretty meek, which seems odd.

We may have been rather spoilt recently, what with 900hp S-Classes and suchlike, plus there will be a six-cylinder version to follow, but to only see a 21hp "performance upgrade" as the main tweak for this X250d seems a bit mean. It does bring another 42lb ft as well, for useful peak figures of 211hp and 376lb ft, although a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds hardly seems right for a company of this heritage. Still, if Brabus can do Smart cars...

The rest of the modifications for the X-Class are cosmetic: the truck now rides on 20-inch wheels with 285-section tyres, the scuff plates are stainless steel, the pedals are aluminium and the appearance is "even more custom and exclusive". Hmm.

For full pick up menace, the Brabus comes with an LED light bar, a more intimidating front bumper design, four exhausts for its four diesely cylinders and some big Brabus badges. Meanwhile those inside in the truck will be treated to "a virtually endless variety of colours and designs, using only the finest leather and Alcantara."

The Brabus range of X-Class parts is available to order now, though whether they'll make it to the UK is unclear at present. That light bar could be handy for clearing the outside lane of the M40 at least...

I believe these are currently still running the Nissan Navara 2.5 diesel engine, however MB are going to be dropping their diesel from the '350d' model range into it at some point (can't remember the displacement). Once this happens I would guess any performance figures quoted here will be usurped anyway?

Worse than a 4-pot weasel in a Brabus is that uneven bonnet shut-line over the headlights.....

Close... It's a 2.3-litre engine, as used in the Renault Master.

3.0-litre (2987cc) I wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes-Benz installed the OM656 ( nerd ) 2.9-litre (2925cc) I6 at a later date.

The previous Navara in 3.0 dCi guise (2993cc V6 | 235 PS / 550 Nm) scrabbled to 62 mph in 9.3 seconds and went on to 121 mph. I would expect an X350d would be a little quicker than that (265 PS / 620 Nm), especially with two further ratios in its gearbox.

Is it me or does the Brabus look a little like a Great Wall?

Four exhausts for a four cylinder that takes 11.5 seconds to get to 60 mph. Dear me. I guess any faster versions will have to have six or eight?

Sooner or later, the market for pick up trucks will take-off in the UK. Brave move from Mercedes but this is not the vehicle to make the difference.

At least Bodo is no longer around to see this abomination.

Branding a step too far.
