Porsche RS Spyder visor cam: Time For Coffee?

The forgotten Porsche Le Mans racer as you've never seen it before

Remember the Porsche RS Spyder? There's every reason you might not, what with Porsche's vast array of successful sportscars, plus the fact that the RS Spyder was an LMP2 car - rather than a highest tier LMP1.

Despite that, it's worth recalling that the RS Spyder clocked up some notable victories. It won the P2 class at Le Mans in 2008 and 2009, took championships in the American Le Mans Series and was also triumphant at the 2008 12 Hours of Sebring. It raced from the end of 2005 until 2010.

Here we see the RS Spyder in action at Laguna Seca, reunited with factory driver Jeroen Bleekemolen for the Rennsport celebration in 2015. As noted in the video description, the RS stopped competing just as onboard camera tech was really improving, so to see one race in HD is a real treat.

This is most definitely a race too, Bleekemolen giving the Spyder everything in the glorious Californian sunshine. While the speed differential between it and the older Porsches is notable, as is the fierce V8 bark, it should be noted just how challenging the RS Spyder looks to drive. We probably all now assume that 21st century racers are quite docile, but there's real effort being exerted here by Bleekemolen. It's a joy to watch, even with some slightly squeaky bum moments...

See the vid below, and set aside a quarter of an hour of your day, for proof of why the RS Spyder absolutely deserves to be remembered as one of the Porsche sportscar greats. It'll be worth it.

Great vid.
6th gear is obviously not set up for Laguna Seca though.
