BMW 'M Performance Parts Concept' for Goodwood

More carbon, less weight, much gold for Festival of Speed M2

BMW M Performance Parts are not new to the M2; indeed they were announced before the first drives in 2016. So what, you may be thinking, is BMW playing it? Some bits are gold, the paint is matt Frozen black and the kidney grille surround appears to be carbon fibre. Yuck.

However, there's far more to this 'M Performance Parts Concept' than meets the eye. It has a lighter battery, for example, saving 14kg. Further kilos are shed with a carbon roof, bonnet, boot and side panels. Those natty gold wheels are forged to save six kilos, and come with Michelin Cup 2 tyres. Combine those with the lighter front seats (-9kg) and simpler rear bench (-13kg) and the total weight saving for this Concept over the Competition is more than 60kg.

It doesn't end there, either; two-way adjustable coilovers are fitted, with 12 stages of compression and 16 of rebound to choose from, plus a 20mm reduction in ride height. Inside the carbon 'n' gold theme continues, with plentiful Alcantara as well. BMW also makes a point of the springs and brake calipers being black, which is probably the point where there's not much more to say...

BMW will exhibit this concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with some of the carbon parts available now (bonnet, grille) and the rest to follow in the coming months. No prices have yet been released, though large body panels in carbon never have come cheap. To be honest the seats and the wheels would probably suit just fine for us. And the windscreen sticker, of course...

Eh? what indeed are they playing it?

Looks like Kahn 'enhancement' format to me.

60kg sounds suspiciously similar to the amount of weight the Competition gained of the old M2.

How much are they going to charge for all this carbon?

oo a nice M car. Good old BMW - they are still the go to for a classic sports car, simple as that

and it's good to see they're being normal people and not going crazy building Sennas and GT2 RSs and 812 Superfasts and DBS Superleggeras, which are all ridiculous and wholly unnecessary
Yeah but the M2 is supposed to be the 'entry level' M car. The cheaper one that attracts a younger audience to the M experience...apparently.

Carbon Roof? carbon seats? My guess is that these two options alone will add £6K+ to the price tag.

What “classic sports car” do BMW make currently ?

As for para 2 are you sure you are on the right forum ?

Saw it yesterday, the bits on the show car would apparently cost 30k. if and when they all go on sale. A lot of money for a 2 series but it would be a huge bargain for similar on a Supercar, manufacturing costs are apparently still very high

Looks good, but I'm not too keen on that rear spoiler/boot setup, just looks like a weird shape... would be better if it just went straight across.

Or, if you want to lose 60 KG from your car right now, tell your passenger to walk...

money better spend on, driver training, tyres and break pads. if you want to loose weight, I have a big dump before I go on track, that must be worth a few KG ?

not bad considering the m3 cs actually weighs more than the non cs!

also it's 3x that porsches lightweight special 'T' which sold in great numbers because of it's 'focused appeal'

mad but true

It doesn’t make sense if somebody buys all of the parts enabling it to be a 90+ grand car, however I think most people will spec a few things.

If I was in the market for one of these, I think I’d go for the wheels and bucket seats, it’s a good idea from BMW.

I don’t think anybody would buy all of the parts, why would you when you can get a full fat M4CS for the same money? Provided that the poster above is right about the 30k premium for the lot.

Not a bad looking thing.
That spoiler/bootlid looks a bit Lamborghini with the sharp angles and decals.

- 60kg isn't epic but they seem to have done it by swapping things for lighter things rather than just taking things away.
Taking things away is easy - take the back seats out altogether and you could probably add 20+ kg of weight loss. But you'd have no back seats.
Take all the toys out and you could save another 5-10kg but you wouldn't have toys.
It'll probably cost a bomb though. Carbon roof, bonnet and tailgate - ouch.

yes 60kg is a fairly healthy amount to cut from a mainstream car (even a 1600kg mainstream car) without removing any features/functionality. These things aren't heavy because they bolt lumps of lead to the chassis, the weight that's there is all there for some sort of reason.

I dread to think that what it'll cost though. smile

Saw this in the flesh, the windscreen decal is unbelievably naff. Not sure on the whole car and mods, seems abit "chavvy" to me?
