150mph drone vs 911 GT3 RS: Time for Tea?

Frivolous? Yes. But essential too, of course...

No excuse needed for clicking on this. World speed record drone versus a Porsche 911 GT3 RS? At a deserted Festival of Speed, at what looks like dusk? It would be criminal not to watch it.

Obviously there's a backstory. The team behind the drone - made up of a partnership between XBLADES (the pilots) and Wingcopter (the manufacturer) broke the world record just last week, managing a two-way average of 240.06km/h (or just shy of 150mph in proper).

They filmed that too, although it's less dramatic than you might imagine (even at night, with an accompanying light show). How to spice it up a bit? With one of the world's foremost sports cars, of course. And on the hillclimb this time. Who wins? Guess.

Yesterday I was driving in France on an Autoroute at 140km/h and a drone flew along the road and then shot off in the distance. I've been wondering how fast drones can fly since then.

Much faster......

A remotely decent racing drone has a power to weight ratio of 10 to 1, it would leave the car for dead given that the record for the track averages 160kph.

Not sure how fast this one is - obviously it's not an aeroplane style design but still, I guess it follows Colin Chapman's principles...

Some of the pro pilots are scarily fast:

The video is in real time, yes!

It's hard to get into in the beginning, but worth putting the practice in. Here's one of my videos (this footage is from a GoPro strapped to the quad; the live footage that you see like above is usually analogue, due to latency issues of anything digital):

Enjoy!

Seems a bit unfair having the drone pilot strapped into the Porsche.

In future it should be based on the average of two runs: the first with both drone pilot and car driver in the car, the second with the GT3 fitted with remote controls and then strap both the pilot and Porsche driver to the drone...
