Peugeot 207 THP Spider: Spotted

The 207 CC was one of the most hateful Peugeots ever; fortunately this Spider is a little more appealing...

When you think of fast Peugeots there are plenty that spring to mind; the 106 Rallye, 205 GTI and RCZ R to name but a few. The French marque has also had more than its fair share of sporting success too, from the Le Mans winning 905 Evo, to the record breaking 208 T16 PikesPeak, via the Dakar conquering 3008 DKR Maxi.

Ranking among its less familiar, though equally cool, creations is this: the Peugeot 207 THPSpider. Developed from the brand's bonkers 20Cup concept and created for a one-make racing series which supported several rounds of the 2007 LMS - as well as a round of the WTCC - the 207 Spider saw action at tracks including Monza, Spa, Silverstone and the Nurburgring.

Costing €42,000 at the time - with an estimated additional outlay of €70,000 per season - the track-only car was powered by a mid-mounted version of the roadgoing 207 GTI's turbocharged 1.6-litre engine. It produced 175hp and 177lb ft of torque but, while in the road car it was encumbered by 1,250kg of needless heft - you know, windscreens and rear seats and the like - the Spider weighed in at just 720kg. According to the ad, though, this example has been fitted with something called the THP Evolution Package, which included a larger turbo and dual intercoolers to increase overall power to 230hp.

Peugeot's original aim was to use as many production components from its contemporary range as possible, so the discs, brake calipers and steering system were borrowed from the 407, the radiator and intercooler from the 207 and the steering column from the 206. But throw in the locking diff, six-speed paddle-shifted sequential gearbox and slick racing tyres, and the 207 Spider was as about far removed from Peugeot's road offerings as you could get. Official performance figures are hard to come by but, while claims of "comfortably out lapping a 720S" seem like something of a stretch, there's no doubt it'll be mighty quick.

Aside from the power boost, this car has also benefited from an extensive maintenance and upgrade program - detailed in a Readers' Cars thread, in fact - with with no expense seemingly spared, meaning most of those Peugeot parts have been significantly uprated. It comes with a large quantity of replacement parts, too. And it's the only functioning example on these shores. And just look at it!

On top of their winnings, the overall victor of the Spider Cup won a test day in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP - the car which would go on to claim three LMS championships and one overall win at the Le Mans 24 Hours. As far as preparation for such a daunting encounter goes, there can't have been many better ways for them to ready themselves than 14 races in this fantastic machine. A decade later, and there likely still aren't many ways to access such on-track performance for such a relatively low expense.

Dafydd,

do you not read the forums of this site?

Owned (and recently sold by) a certain Mr poppopbangbang who has an extensive thread on the car...

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Mr poppopbangbang is responsible for some of the most interesting threads on here, from a shonky old high mileage 996 to a Sauber F1 car Billy monger recently drove.

Pistonheads-Members matter.

P.S. If poppopbangbang says it will lap Bedford faster than a 720S, I'd be inclined to believe him.

Ah, I wondered if it was PPBB's car or another one.

The thread says it's now found a happy new owner, so PH has "Spotted" it a bit late...

Question is has it actually lapped Bedford quicker than a 720s? At the sprints it competed in it struggled to get past my lighlty fettled Exige s2 NA !

would you be restricted to track sessions or is it eligible for any race series?

PPBB's original thread was a great read.

Typical of PH's to do a for sale article on car that's already sold though.

Of course I read the forums, although admittedly I don't have the time to acquaint myself with every thread on the site... And given the number of weekends I've sacrificed to Sunday Services I can assure you I am well aware that the members matter!

I'm also aware of poppopbangbang and his fantastic work, having previously chosen his Sauber build as a Reader's Car of the Week https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-britishcars/sa... In my defense in this case, the title of his 207 Spider post doesn't exactly leap out at you, and besides I can't see the harm in drawing some extra attention to such a cool car which, at the time of writing (and of this post) is still listed as being for sale in the classifieds. I'll add a link to the thread into the story now though as it is, as usual, very good.

Yes the 207 THP is now sat in my garage at home, waiting for me to sort out a way to get the thing to the track. It's a bigger car than it looks and extremely low so my existing trailer won't work. We had a heck of a job even unloading it off PPBB's truck. I'll update the Readers Cars thread as things move forwards on it - we are looking at building a spare motor for it with some more power and a few other things over winter but first I really want to get some seat time!

Thanks its a work in progress. When we built it and had the extra space I filled it almost right away. I think my Dad was right - he said no matter how big your work bench is you'll only ever have a twelve inch square to work in!!

I have been looking today at van options for the 207 bearing in mind that I've got to double utility up and use the vehicle as my every day work transport also and it has to take pallets. Loading a race car onto a flat bed is a problem for the solving!

Any advice gratefully received so we can get this show on the road and go 207'ing!

Off topic, so apologies but what make are the lifts and what is your ceiling height?

Be interested to read the original thread and updates on this. Looks like an interesting project.

Ah but you're a driving god Hugh whereas I am just a fat man who can bolt. To be fair I really struggled to make it work on cold R888s. It was much better following some setup work and having Avon make some ZZR in an appropriate compound. On Dunlops it was 0.4 seconds quicker around the South circuit than said 720s with the same (fat man who can bolt) driver wink

Sure - the double four poster is a Strongman Forth lift on which I relocated the motor and made some detail changes such as lightweight longer ramps. It’s a good parking lift for a far eastern product but for working on I don’t like hydraulic ratchet lifts. That one is 240v

The two poster is a Cascos synchro three phase. Has a motor in each post so only cables joining the two sides which means nothing in the way on the floor. Goes up and down on an inch thick screw via a huge brass nut. You get inch perfect placement - it’s a really wonderful lift but it’s 3 phase only so I have a Digi Phase converter in the garage to give me that off the normal mains.

The single poster is the same deal - three phase Cascos unit - but obviously lifting from one side only. If you’re working on sills that’s a great lift also. They make that one in 240v as well.

The Cascos lifts are a little more expensive but having used them I’d wholeheartedly recommend.

Hi Julian,

I sent you a pm.
Nice to find someone who own a Spider, too. And will use it as a trackday car like I do.

Regards Christoph
