BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe first look

Nurburgring test laps for the four-door luxury coupe - watch out Panamera?

The 8 Series is an important car for BMW; not only does it resurrect an iconic badge not seen for more than two decades, it also wears the brand's halo as a flagship sports car and establishes BMW presence in a yet more expensive sector. No pressure, then...

Following its debut appearance at Geneva for the M8 Gran Coupe concept, an M850i four-door prototype has been spied testing on the Nordschleife. It looks to have retained much of what made the concept distinctive - as is often the way with recent BMWs - most notably at the rear where the boot incorporates a rear spoiler that links the lights. At the front, too, the shape of the kidney grilles and headlights is familiar. While the intakes, bumpers and exhausts appear less aggressive here than on the Geneva car, it's worth reasserting the idea that that 8 Series previewed a 600hp flagship - this 850i is putting out a mere 530hp...

Otherwise there's not much more to tell at the moment, what with the car being disguised and not actually yet confirmed for production. Its sheer size is notable, surely at least five metres long, as is the fact this car is seemingly using the standard iron brakes - as denoted by the blue calipers. Could it be that BMW brakes are finally up to task?

Autocar suggests that a four-door 8 Series will make production after the regular coupe, with a late 2019 on-sale date expected. Expect anticipation and excitement for this car to run as high as the two-door - more news when we have it!

wow - looks like evolution not revolution in the styling compared to the M6GC.

Cheeky monkeys are Mercedes putting the advert for its competition behind one of the best photo op corners on the ring.

Very funny....

After all that hype of there being a fresh new model called the 8 series, its just a new 6 series Gran Coupe.

That is literally it. There's no more to it. It has absolutely nothing to do with the original 8 series from the 90s

Was this 4 door bloater supposed to be anything like the 8 series from the 90’s ?

But why call it an 8 series then? Just continue using the 6-series name...

To be fair it is an insult to the 6GC. I desperately want to like the new 8 in any form, but every picture I just go a little something along the lines of something is wrong, but not sure what it is.

The rear bumper is still all wrong to me, but that is being brutal, and it lacks the more "delicate" nature of the 6 for some rather obvious, dull and exaggerated aggressive lines.

As for the exhaust finishers do not get me started....

They do a 2 door coupe 8 series also. This is a Gran Coupe indicating it’s a biggun.

Are you in the market for an 8 series then ?

8 is a bigger number than 6 so they can justify a higher price tag.

In the same way the last 6 series had nothing to do with the 6 series in the 80's?

Yes, it does, actually. the 8 is based upon the 7 series, not the 5....like the 6 series was (and like the 8 series of the 90's was based on the 7 series). So in that historical sense, it has more in common with the old 8 series than the 6....

This was always known as the 6-series replacement. That's not new news.

Slightly off topic, but aren't the 7-series and 5-series based on the same platform anyway?

so there's the 6GC, 7er and 8GC?

basically the same car with slightly different roof lines? Hmz. Seems a bit pointless.

Hmm, looks a bit Meh,

I think the 6 is a handsome beast, but an 8 needs much more presence.

They could have "evolved" the i8 kinda look if anything...
