Ferrari Challenge UK announced

Want to race a 488 but only have a National A licence? Now you can!

Beyond the obvious financial hurdles, one of the more significant obstacles to getting into a Ferrari Challenge series is obtaining an International C licence. Because no matter how much money you have, the requirement is still there to complete National A level races before being eligible for the next grade of licence from the MSA. These must be at three different venues and will obviously take some time.

But if you don't have time (and just a National A), there is now a solution: Ferrari Challenge UK, which has just been launched and requires only the National A licence. So with six signatures from a club level series (or five plus one from marshalling), anybody with sufficient wherewithal can race a Ferrari 488 Challenge. Against other 488 Challenges. Marvellous.

Beginning next year, the Ferrari Challenge UK will be an eight-race series at four tracks: Brands Hatch, Snetterton, Croft and Silverstone, with a prologue and test at Brands beforehand. Ferrari says the UK championship will run to the same rules and regulations as those series that are held in Europe, North America and Asia.

Sound cool? We'd concur. The press release states the UK trophy is open to any clients over here with a Ferrari 488 Challenge race car, and that any budding Challengistas should speak to their dealer. For those craving a more immediate hit of Ferrari racing action (and a purer one, you might argue, given it lacks turbos) a couple of 458 Challenges are currently in the PH classifieds: this yellow car is up for sale at Carrs Ferrari in Exeter, and this one is being sold with nearly 50,000 miles on it - no harm in adding a few more then...

I wish it well but if it's anything like so many predecessors a ten car field will drone round for 20 minutes , maybe a couple of cars quite brisk , the rest pedestrian .(eg 911 GT3 series, see also GR8 , not to mention the awful TCR etc ) One person will overtake someone on lap one , the end. The way forward is to include this as a class within existing championships (CSCC , NSSC CNC etc) unless and until there's too many of them . Which will never happen .

488 Challenge cars are already permitted in GT Cup, and you don't need a National A, just a National B.

Nat. B for minimum entry, although higher power cars need a Nat. A licence.

To be compliant with MSA Regulation Q9.1.2. Any Driver competing in a vehicle of 0.34bhp/kg or
higher (excluding driver weight) and measured at the driven wheels, with the exception of single
seaters as detailed in 9.1.1 above, must be the holder of a Race National ‘A’ licence, as a
minimum.

The 488 will require an A then

Because that's just what we needed, another one make series....

If this gets a grid of more than 8 cars and doesn't disappear after a year or two i'd be amazed. What does this give us, or anyone competing, that British GT, GT Cup or Britcar doesn't already?

One make isn't always a bad thing, badly managed/regulated one make is though. People always say they want a level playing field where talent can shine through, the only way to achieve this is with one make!

Talent can of course shine through away from one make, but so can a large cheque book!

Not saying a 488 Championship is a good idea (although no one complains about Porchse or Ginetta or Clios or <insert one make here>) but they deserve the chance!

Was talking about this very thing the other day. I could very easily spend years on just this, becoming a gentlemen racer and attending various events around the world. Some people have a serious lack of imagination.
