I noticed that Andy Palmer displayed an AMOC badge on his (is it) DBS classic.
Presumably therefore he would be attached to AMOC Area No.5.

According to the AMOC website, the latest event for Area 5 was 3 years ago.

Can a new member latch onto their adjacent county area by choice, or do the rules make that impossible?
I am prepare to wear red trousers if that helps, but no nose hair unfortunately, and I am not too sure about the wife swapping - how old are they?

Attending the wrong Area meeting? Epaulettes torn off and your membership annulled? No. Most Area Reps are pleased to see anyone. I think most area meeting goers try several and attend the one they like. It makes for a pleasant drive.

Most of the Areas seem quite active. It’s just not reflected on the forums as they all seem to work off-line (or advertise in the monthly magazine).

The only thing to be aware of though is that most of the monthly meetings are held mid-week. So not ideal for those working long hours to pay for their Aston Martins (one reason why I’ve never made it to one).

But I guess that’s unavoidable really for the Area Reps who organise these things

For balance, I thought the membership cost was quite reasonable as it gets you discounts to event such as Hampton Court Concours, Silverstone Classic etc and many of the people I have met have been nice & very helpful.

I was perturbed by a guy who lost patience explaining about what version his very nice DB4 was, who then walked off leaving me a little surprised, but that was a couple of years ago and I suspect he is dead now, as he was pretty old.....

Note, I have not inherited any money and do not own salmon pink or red trousers...yet. I am also less than 50 years old and not very posh!

I must admit, I don't go to many events, as I rarely drive my Aston, as have to work a lot to pay for membership to exclusive clubs

Mid week meets so they can gain OAP lunch discounts I suspect and they have to be back at their respective care homes by 6pm.

Dr Palmer probably gets his membership for free anyway and or his expenses pays for it. Ive seen his DBS and its lovely albeit he only usually takes it out at weekends due to it mostly spending all of its time at Gaydon on the hall of fame line up adjacent to main reception. He also has a man who cleans it all back up for him when he drops it back off Monday morning. RHIP I suppose.

Yes indeed and your definitely one of those all sorts arnt you.
I think V8LM actually got the story wrong.

Iirc what happened was some guy bought a DB7 and. But he then went on to the AMOC forum and began ranting about it for months, posting literally every few minutes about how useless it was, poor value etc, full of people with red trousers and not the right sort of “folks”, all this despite not even being a member. Some of the AMOC membership thought this was a bit cheeky from a guy free-loading off their membership fees

He was then discovered to have bought an AMOC badge from a jumble sale and put it on his car. When the hypocrisy of this was pointed out said madman then ranted a whole lot more, driving several people off the forum with his spam/abuse/paranoia. Personally I felt a bit sorry for him, I think he genuinely needed some form of therapy

Albeit my sympathy diminished when he was rude about my children who (as many of you who have met them) will vouch are impeccably behaved

Said nutter was then kicked off the forum, hopefully to never be seen again. I had hoped he had chilled out....

16 new posts on the forum this morning covering a pretty wide range of topics such as the DB7 Anniversary, the forthcoming DBX, Ian Calum's Vanquish a vintage radiator grill and Bluetooth connections for radios.

What is a DBS classic?? And from memory (an article in Vantage magazine) he joined the club himself. The club might decide he is worthy or honorary or lifetime mdmbership, that is their call

So sorry William, I was being lazy and did not look up the correct model name.

Just trying to differentiate that model, from the 2007 to 2012 model.

Didn’t realise he had a DBS. Has a couple of V8s - old and new.

If we're talking about Andy Palmer's car he has a stunning 1980 Aston Martin V8 Vantage (I don't know if he has others)

Sorry everyone to have created confusion by calling, what I now know is a 1980 V8 Vantage, an '(is it) DBS classic'.

I know that basic body shape was in production for a very long time, and it seems to have been given various model names during that period. Think DBS was in there at some stage. I obviously need to do homework to understand it all.

Is it therefore correct, that the basic model name is V8, but as this is a higher powered version, it therefore has Vantage added after the name?

If only it was that simple. For quite a long time Vantage was the name added to a model name to explain it was hotted up; DB2 Vantage, DB4 Vantage and so on. Then came the DBS, the car after the DB6, which was meant to have the V8 engine but it wasn't ready. This car is often incorrectly called the DBS6. Between the DBS and the DBS V8 came the Vantage which essentially was a DBS with the single headlight style. Then it settled down again with the V8 and V8 Vantage. Since then the have been models called DBS, Vantage and V8.

You'll have to study long and hard to grasp it completely. All of it is in the AMOC's Register of Cars but it's tough to read. There are so many books though. Start by reading up on the particular cars or era you're interested in and build on that.

ETA: When someone at the factory was being taught what Vantage used to mean they replied with "I thought we had AMR for that".

Phew, that sounds complicated. I have been warned.

Think my studying had better stop with:- 'Vantage 2005 to 2018'.
My completed table of all the Limited Editions and Special Editions, is due to be posted on Thursday.
