Lexus LC Convertible Concept unveiled

The LC has its charms, no doubt. The convertible version looks to build on them...

You'll recall the LC. It's the big, almost very handsome coupe you see taking up plenty of real estate in the local Lexus showroom. We last drove it in late 2017 - and with the naturally-aspirated V8 onboard, almost liked it very much.

One of the things it had going for it was a prolific amount of presence at the kerbside, it being a 2+2 unbeholden to the European way of doing things. That and the soundtrack coaxed from the atmospheric engine at beyond 7,000rpm. Even with its downsides taken into account (it doesn't ride properly, for a start) both positives combined to rather payout on the sizeable investment needed to buy one.

If the thought of that appeals, then the convertible version is likely to hit your G spot even harder. Lexus has revealed the new model ahead of its public debut at Detroit, and, while you still have to make your peace with that grille, it does look stupendously moreish from many angles.

For now, it has the word 'concept' in its title, but it might as well be 'preview' because Lexus does not have a history of showing us things it doesn't intend on building a short while later - especially nothing as production-ready as the convertible appears to be.

Clearly there's space in that rear deck for a roof to live, although there's no confirmation at this stage whether that will be a hard or fabric folding top. Either way there's still room for two short-legged passengers in the back. They're unlikely to appreciate the 22-inch rims under them, but expect those to be for show only.

Expect, too, a big ticket price tag. A high-spec LC500 is in the £90k ballpark, and a Convertible would assuredly sit above that in the range pecking order. A six-figure sum is almost inevitable then, but so too is the 5.0-litre V8 lump if the chief designer's winking comments about a production version being 'exhilarating in many different ways' is to be taken at face value.

Quite a competitor for the new Porsche 911 Convertible, then. In more ways than one.

That's a very good looking convertible!

From other reports I've read it would appear Lexus are going with a hard-roof, it'll be interesting to see what it looks like when it's up.

I like the fact that they darkened the chrome framing the rear lights, it improves the appearance a lot.

Too much radiator.

The rest of the LC I quite like.

I like the LC but those rear seats are useless, they'd have been better off creating more luggage space. A shelf with a nice pair of tailored bags for instance...

That is pretty smooth.

Nice V8. Roof down. Great styling.

Lovely.

Despite the PH review of the original, I think the LC is a cracking car (and yes, I’ve driven it and yes, on track too).

I believe it was conceived as a convertible from the outset so this iteration will please those on Rodeo Drive.

Beautifully styled, fantastically put together “, glorious V8 (or Hybrid if your conscience dictates) other than the price what’s not to like?

Very nice and an F version of the LC 500 is on the books too.

Gorgeous! Like an old Merc SL before the nose started looking like a truck.

I’d like to see it with the roof up too...

Considering it probably weighs half a 911 more than a 911, I think it competes more with a Mercedes SL, or a BMW 8 series. I'd prefer it over those two in any case.

I test drove V8 LC500 thinking it would be a good replacement for my year old Vantage V8 roadster and was ready to buy it. It is a really great car but problem with LC for me was that it only felt fun if you took it to the red line where engine snarls and pops which isn’t going to happen much in day to day driving if you want to keep your licence. The LC is very refined and perhaps a bit too quiet apart from high revs and was more like a Merc SL500 experience for me. Got back in Aston after test drive and it made me realise how much fun Vantage is even when not driving at high speeds . Perhaps I just like cars that make nice burbly exhaust noises and that don’t have perfect autos or electric steering?

I'm a big Lexus fan but their convertible efforts always make you look like an over-haired American real-estate agent.

I really like these and think they look stunning. Makes me think of what a new Jaguar XK could be like.
For me it would have to be the V8 but can see why people would purchase the hybrid as a daily driver. In the Aston world it would be more of a DB9/11 than a Vantage rival.

Lexus four-seat convertible gt with a normally aspirated v8. Where have I heard that before?

The new one certainly looks better!

I think PH review is only review which did criticize how this car drives. Makes me wonder why?

Just look at it, no wonder the Jaguar is a clunker.

I really like what Lexus are trying to convey with their design, across the range They seem to be gaining in confidence, keen to lead rather than follow. Others, most notably our own Jaguar need to take note. If you are selling a premium image, your product needs to be identifiable.

With Lexus you also get very pleasant sales/service people who treat you very well. Plus servicing costs and extended manufacturer warranties that come at a cost that defies logic or at the very least a fraction of what you would expect from other marques.

This definitely. Today I saw an XE R-Sport (white), a new XF (black) and a pre-facelift previous model XF (black) in the same car park today - am afraid to say that the XE didn't really stand out and the new XF looked very similar to the Audi parked next to it. The older XF, admittedly on big wheels (SV8 type) stood out and looked a whole lot me special than the other two and indeed more special than most of the other cars in the car park. It has more of a Tesla model S style (yes the XF came first) than an Audi A4/A6 look that the current range resemble.
