Silverstone Auctions Race Retro preview

An 838-mile Escort Cosworth heads to auction (again) but our money would be going elsewhere

It's no secret that fast Fords have skyrocketed in value in recent years, but prices do seem to be plateauing, even for some of the most well-preserved examples. Evidence of this comes in the form of a rather sobering example of just how the market has evolved: this particular Ford Escort Cosworth. It's one of the lots in Silverstone Auctions' upcoming Race Retro sale and is valued at £80-£90,000 thanks to its ridiculously low odometer reading of 838 miles.

It also went under the hammer around 15 months ago, when it sold for £91,125 (along with a similarly pristine RS2000 which fetched £97,875). Between then and now, the car has driven just a single solitary mile, which was likely just the distance involved in loading and unloading it from its various auction transports. Perhaps not the money-spinning investment it once was, then, but for a wealthy Ford fan keen on beholding their favourite car every day without losing any money, it still represents an apparently sound purchase.

For those more interested in driving, however, this 51,000-mile example is similarly specced, and can be enjoyed a reasonable amount without wiping 50 per cent off its value. It's estimated at £40-45,000 - a relative bargain, then.

As you might expect, there are plenty of other driver-focussed machines up for grabs, with the likes of this Peugeot 207 THP Spider, Porsche 968 Club Sport and beautiful MGC GTS all joining the Fords on the auction block. Finally, there's this tin top Saab Turbo race car, replete with N24 pedigree - it retired a painstaking 23.5 hours into the race having run as high as ninth. It looks fantastic in that cars-that-should-never-have-been-race-cars kind of way, and should provide plenty of bang for your buck thanks to its £22,500-£27,500 estimate.

There's plenty more to tickle your fancy, of course, from manual Ferraris to vintage memorabilia. And we can't think of many better ways to daydream away a little of your Monday afternoon than by viewing the full lot list here. Share your favourites with us in the comments below!

Everyone knows this will be snapped up by some 'investor' for crazy money, only to be stored somewhere and never driven.

Nothing to see here, real enthusiasts move on please.................

one of the Fogarty branded bikes in the mix aswell. They didnt rip up too many tree's in WSB as I recall when all they had to beat were privateer ducati's.

Isn't the point of the article that, that isn't the case any more? I know 15 months isn't a huge amount of time, but it's value seems unchanged

Lot 315, the Escort Twin Cam would be my choice of that auction.

Insert the people talking about what they could buy instead of the Escort, not realising that an Investor wouldn't want 2 track built E46 M3's.

Don't think so. But #18 was spotted with a dealer at Chapel-en-le-Frith in October.... https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

If you don't consider 90k for an Escort crazy money then I suppose not.

Not crazy in the slightest if it's gonna return more than that to an investor.

Well it didnt make the minimum reserve last time round and that was 85k, Silverstone auction had to give up some of its commission just so it would sell, think it sold for 81K or 83K and they made the rest up. Anyway the market is a different place since then so will be surprised if it makes more than it did last time, but you never know do you

I could be proved wrong, and I understand that a lot of people have nostalgic feelings towards Escort Cosworths..... but for me that is bonkers money. I'd be very surprised if they made any money on it in the long term. I'd be surprised if it beat inflation.

I’d have this, the estimate is a serious ‘come and get me’, even as a rolling chassis...

This also looks good value, won’t get any cheaper!

Cars being sold as it’s not an investment anymore, owner could easily loose 15% to 20% in the next 12 months if the market keeps dropping. Even with a 20% drop it will still
be a pricey escort. You would need to sit on it for a very very long time for it to make you any money if you bought it for £85k, let’s not forget a car like needs to be insured, stored correctly, service records kept in check and not driven for it to retain any of its true value.

I would image it coukd be bought by a collector who considers £100k small change.

No and mine is actually owned by another PH'er now!

This car is pre-evo spec but includes the kit with it to convert it to evo spec. However it's never turned a wheel and needs A LOT of recommissioning to make it a go'er and then you still have the issue of who can flash the Evo engine cal to the ECU on it.... They are amazing bits of kit and a huge amount of fun but this one is an awful lot of money for something that needs a proper going over.

A friend of mine looks after the four door mk2 Escort rally car for the owner. Very impressive car and spec.

I hate to say it but with mileage like that you'd be insane to drive it ever. It'll be locked away for the next 25 years

some lovely cars but just look at some of the 'memorabillia'!

One of the five original 'Leaping cat' brasses? Stunning! With an estimate to match too!

The estimate on this one also makes yours look like an absolute bargain...
