Mercedes-AMG vs. Alfa Romeo: Pic of the Week

Spoiler alert: we had fun doing this one. How could we not? The might of Mercedes-AMG versus the charisma of Alfa Romeo. A 510hp 4.0-litre V8 versus a 510hp 2.9-litre V6 - both unarguably among the best engines in the world today. The righteousness of rear-wheel drive versus real-world conquering all-wheel drive. And, of course, contemporary wagon against crowd-pleasing SUV.

The shoot-out could hardly be more of-the-moment, and nor could you ask for a better of example of the respective breed in either corner. We've already raved about the latest C63 S in its other available formats and the Quadrifoglio was declared king of the super-fast SUVs at Christmas. All that was left to find was an appropriate road and a half-day break in the appalling weather. We located both.

It will be interesting to see if you go in and give the Alfa a good kicking in the opening paragraphs again for no apparent reason (apart from the fact that it's up against a German).

Or, whether, finally the dim and distant past can be left where it should be and we see a more objective approach now.

The Stelvio is effectively a slightly taller, 4wd Giulia estate so I think it could be an interesting comparison.

It's terrible, isn't it?

I can't even work out where the focal point is because nothing seems sharp. Maybe one of the journalist's children was given daddy's phone and told to go behind that big rock and take a picture of the nice cars.
