ABT boosts WLTP-approved VW Golf R to 350hp

A new particulate filter has done little to harm the R's tunability

You might not think the introduction of a particulate filter to the VW Golf R would stir much excitement in the workshop of ABT, but actually it has provided the German tuner with an opportunity to revisit the super-hatch and extract a rather healthy 350hp from its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine – all without removing that WLTP-enforced filter.

This boost of output by 50hp is joined by a bump in torque to 325lb ft, a 45lb ft improvement on the standard R, which, as you might expect, provides the all-wheel drive five-door with even more rapid straight-line performance. ABT is yet to reveal how much has been shaved from the standard car’s 4.9 second 0-62mph time, but something close to 4.5 seconds would rank it in line with the likes of Porsche’s 718 Cayman S.

Perhaps ABT will get the stopwatch out once it completes development of a new exhaust system, which is currently being engineered to work with the new filter and breathe out of 102mm diameter tailpipes. The firm has also confirmed that new wheels of 18 to 20-inch diameters are available with the Golf, while buyers after the full Abt package can spec sports springs or an adjustable setup to sharpen things up. An ABT anti-roll bar kit is also offered.

It’s a proper bit of kit, then – so while we’re all familiar with the Golf R and its brilliantly rounded performance traits from the factory, we suspect some Golf R owners might find ABT's upgrades tough to resist.

Honestly what is the point, i dont get this car, its rapid but utterly uninvolving to drive and adding more power isent what it needs. Its too quick for the road as it is.

Auto car, What car, Evo, Pistonheads, Top Gear, Fifth Gear and Car magazine all say it's a great drive but I'm sure you probably know better.

Its a fantastic all round car, but is a little dull and attracts thieves.

Why would anyone spend a load on money on this when a remapped Golf R would be quicker??

Oh hang on, it doesn't quite work on this thread does it.

I agree but would imagine its warranty approved like the SEAT version.

Guessing this thread will end up filled with idiots who feel driven to provide whatever nonsense reasons for hating VAG cars.

ABT are from just a company offering a remap and I fully expect the real world performance of this car to be frankly mind boggling for "family hatch"

Because of course our roads aren’t full of potholes, have minimal traffic on them, have no speed / average speed cameras on them, and there are no unmarked cop cars, allowing one to explore the handling limits on every drive.
I’d guess that for 95% of drivers 95% of the time it’s involving enough....

Where have you read this? I’ve seen that the ABT kit is available for the Cupra ST, but the article I read stated that the warranty was provided by ABT, not Seat. I imagine the same with the VW and Skoda upgrades.

I have to confess that I was VAG hater, but I kept my opinions private rather than post at every opportunity. See my car history - I adore proper driver’s cars.

On my last holiday however (with my 8 week old son in tow) I was fortunate enough to hire a 1.5 petrol Golf for 7 days - what an epic car it was. Why? The steering, gear box and brakes were perfectly synchronised both in terms of weight and response. Apple car play - awesome. Ergonomics - spot on.

I’m now convinced that the Golf R must be an epic ‘tick all boxes’ daily but I haven’t driven one.

Matt (never owned a ‘dub)

We pick up my a new 310 Golf R tomorrow and I for one can’t wait. I know it’s not the last word in anything but so what!

My fave car this decade that I’ve driven is a an F Pace S with a diesel V6 but with 300hp. After they’d fixed it I got my X5 E drive back with 300 hp that feels more like 200 (batteries, weight etc). I’m not expecting miracles tomorrow. I’ve loved and lost Alfas including a 164 Cloverleaf, BMWs including an E39 530i an Impreza, an Evo but I’m still excited! And this ABT upgrade may well be right up my street. I’ll let you know

The golf drives well has a great chassis and has plenty of involvement!

Ppl say it’s dull because it’s literally good at everything it does

I think it’s the usual outcome with Golfs they are so competent they are often a tad dull (I’ve owned one).

As a do everything car they are superb but dynamically they are sometimes a bit lacking in the same way as Imprezas sometimes were. Superb pace in all conditions but their competence also makes them feel undramatic.

Rather than more power, I’d prefer the engine sounded better with induction/exhaust mods as they aren’t great sounding cars in standard form.

Does anyone on here think black wheels with silver rims are a good idea aesthetically? Seems to be in vogue right now (esp. on AMG Mercs but also elsewhere, as here). Personally, I think they look vile, but am curious if anyone actually likes them.

Makes it a bit less obvious when you kerb them I suppose.
