Niki Lauda 1949-2019

Austrian triple world F1 champion succumbs to a period of ill health

It's never a pleasant task to report the passing of a motorsport legend; particularly one of such stature and significance as Niki Lauda. An F1 triple world champion, team principal and, latterly, a non-executive chairman at Mercedes-AMG, he has left an indelible mark on the world of Grand Prix racing. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday night.

Recognising the most notable achievement of Lauda's incredible career is no easy job. His return to racing after that horrific Nordschleife crash, back on track just 40 days after third degree burns and lung damage, of course features prominently, though don't forget Lauda is the only driver to have won championships with Ferrari and McLaren, set pole position records and won in only his third race with McLaren - after three years away running his airline company. Lauda's was an exceptional talent, one that proved itself time and time again even in an era of greats.

Work after driving included being team principal for Jaguar F1, commentary jobs and his most recent position for AMG. Plus, of course, his entrepreneurial success running airlines.

The Lauda family statement said: His unique achievements as an athlete and entrepreneur are and will remain unforgettable, his tireless zest for action, his straightforwardness and his courage remain a role model and a benchmark for all of us."

Naturally, tributes have been pouring in from across motorsport, Max Verstappen describing Lauda as "a true legend in our sport" and McLaren saying he will be "forever in our hearts." We can only echo those sentiments, Lauda's passing a tragically sad moment for the sport and the industry. Rest in peace, Niki, and thanks for the memories.

Word legend is used all too often today. Here is a legend in the absolute literal sense. Incredible man and incredible career - RIP.

Indeed. Our builder and I commented last week when a radio DJ described Craig David as legendary!

A sad loss, he always came across as a kind hearted man, yet with balls of steel. It was also heartening that him and Hunt ended up as friends. I'll have to put Rush on one evening soon as a tribute to him.

I will be watching Rush again soon. He approved of it according to interviews. There's a great scene set in Italy with him driving his future wife's car. She doesn't recognise him as it was early Ferrari days. The local hitchhikers do though!

Glad he survived the grim era and had a long happy life.

RIP

No just a legend, but a total hero. Not just supremely talented, but incredibly brave too. RIP Niki.

How sad to wake up to this news, he was very much part of my growing up teenage years, one of the all-time true greats, missing the world championship by just 1 point in his accident year of 1976 was an incredible achievement, I have always been fascinated by his determination and character, RIP Niki

His early drives are seldom mentioned, but here he @ Brands on May 28th 1972, having fun in a 3000E Capri ( second car up from the left and one of 16 Capris raced that day ) whilst working for March Engineering, who sadly folded in 73.

If I remember correctly I think he appeared as himself at the end paying tribute to James - a nice touch.
