McLaren F1 GTR | Pic of the Week

Le Mans is close, and Gordon Murray wants to make another V12 supercar - what else could it be?

With the 2019 running of the Le Mans 24 hours a little over a week away, and Gordon Murray announcing his intent to produce a follow up to the iconic McLaren F1, there was only ever one candidate for our Pic of the Week.

The road-going F1 was never intended to go racing, but such was customer demand that McLaren eventually relented and this was the result: the F1 GTR. So complete a machine was the standard car that the changes required were minimal; carbon brakes, an adjustable rear wing and a full roll-cage made it a racer, larger cooling ducts, revised suspension and an adjustable rear wing made it a highly competitive one.

The BMW V12 was fitted with a mandated air restrictor, reducing output to 600hp, but not preventing the F1 GTR from hitting 205mph down the Mulsanne Straight. Le Mans was, of course, the site of the car's greatest triumph, the venue for its staggering overall win in 1995, with Yannick Dalmas, Masanori Sekiya, and JJ Lehto at the wheel. Their victorious car was retired from competition by McLaren, never racing again, but that's no reason not to grant it pole position on your desktop background.

Great stuff. My first Le Mans and great memories, despite the rain. Remember all the pre-race chat that no one thought they’d last 24 hours, didn’t need to see the track to know they were still running, fantastic noise.

Is it just me, or does that back tyre look a bit flat? smile

What a fantastic car, in my opinion one of the ultimate supercars ever made.

It's not flat. The pressure is merely sub-optimal.
