AMG GT R 'Evo' spied at the 'ring

The AMG GT gets yet more track focus - just how extreme can it become?

Even at launch nearly five years ago, the regular AMG GT S proved itself pretty handy on a race track; certainly, chasing Bernd Schneider around Laguna Seca would throw up any flaws, and there weren't many to be found. It was described as an AMG with "more sophistication than ever before", and that was just the start...

Since 2014 we've had GTs of ever-increasing potency, with C, R and R Pro significantly ramping up the circuit prowess, culminating in that staggering 7:04 Nordschleife lap for the Pro. Now it looks like AMG is taking things up another notch, with a GT that's been initially christened 'Evo' (because that's what the GT3 racer is now called).

Using that name rather than Black Series shows how focussed this car might be; the Black Series cars were often fantastic, though weren't as pared back and serious as this GT looks. Over and above a GT R Pro, this Evo car can be identified by its savage double front splitter layout - it's almost grounding out even through the mini Karussell - some incredible front wing flics and a rear spoiler larger than has even been seen on a GT, at a more aggressive angle than seen on the Pro. Note as well the changed location of the exhausts, moved out to the sides from the centre. The standard car never really wanted for presence, but this Evo makes that GT look as menacing as an A-Class. Look at that front wheel off the ground!

Given the Pro used an unchanged version of the R's 585hp V8, it would seem likely that the next model up must surely boast more power. Don't forget, of course, that the AMG E63 has been available with more than 600hp for a couple of years now, so the potential is clearly there in the 4.0-litre engine. That sort of figure would give parity with (or an advantage over) cars like the McLaren 600LT.

As for specifics, though, we'll be waiting a little longer. Rumour has it that this Evo could be revealed before the end of the year, which could mean a Frankfurt motor show debut in September is viable. Given the Pros won't arrive in the UK until next month, it makes sense for some time to pass before another derivative arrives. Finally though, given that car is £188k, what you're looking at must surely be a £200k AMG GT...

Never liked the looks of the "standard" cars, however the beefed up versions look immense.

I'm actually the opposite I think. Big wings and splitters don't quite work for me on a Mercedes somehow. They're more of a cruiser/GT than a racer to me.

Saying that, the original CLK Black Edition was very lovely.

Can’t wait to see that sans camouflage. Standard R looks lovely enough so this should be interesting.

Mercedes wheels are the absolute nuts. So tasteful, and really suit the cars they end up on.

Looks gross at the front. Too much going on, too aggressive and no elegance. Where is the lessons learnt from the development of the CLK DTM gone...

That's the first time I've seen canards on the very top of the front wings. Odd.

Cooling?

They'll create an area of low pressure right outside those vents behind the front wheels, which will increase airflow through the engine bay...

The car is front engined so unless I'm missing your point by a mile the rear arch vents have nothing to do with cooling.
