'Evija' name confirmed for Lotus EV hypercar

Type 130 project gets its production moniker - take a sneak peek at Goodwood this weekend

Given the Lotus heritage its flagship 'Type 130' hypercar, the first project worked on entirely under Geely's ownership no less, was always going to have a name beginning with 'E'. All the brand icons - Elan, Esprit, Elise, and more - use it, after all. Now we know which E name it'll be: Evija.

Meaning 'the first in existence' or 'the living one', the name is pronounced 'ev-eye-a'. Just so you know. Lotus reckons the name is appropriate because of the innovation in its history, both on the track and off it.

Lotus CEO Phil Popham said: "Evija is the perfect name for our new car because it's the first hypercar from Lotus, our first electric offering and is the first new model under the stewardship of Geely. The Evija is a Lotus like no other, yet a true Lotus in every sense. It will re-establish our brand on the global automotive stage and pave the way for further visionary models."

With the Evija set to be unveiled in full later this month in London, showgoers to this weekend's festival of speed will get an "exclusive glimpse" via a light show on the Lotus stand. That's going to be your best look yet at the outside of the Evija before the reveal.

Other than that, there are no further details for now. But with production scheduled to start next year, there's clearly plenty more to follow. Count us as one among plenty of excited parties.

That was my first thought too! Good luck to them, though. I’d like a Lotus at some point.

Thought the first pic looked like a graphics card.
Not sure what type of clientele Lotus are trying to appeal to, they lost the custom from standard wages weekend driver a few years back.

Does anyone know what price point this is likely to come in at? It just makes it sound like that they are aiming high with this one.

A quick google of Evija brings up a Lithuanian cream to which can be be applied on wounds, burns, abrasions, frost-bitten, dry and cracked skin.

Or a site saying the name derived from the Hebrew name “ḥawwah”, which in turn was derived from the Hebrew word “chavvâh”. The latter sums up what I think of people who like to use weirdly spelt unpronounceable names.

That was what I didn't want to hear to be honest. Can they compete at that level? They are brilliant at what they do, producing cars at a certain level price wise, but at what point will it become psychological hard to pay a certain amount for a Lotus? I take that there will be models introduced between the cars they have now and this? It's a massive jump north from just over 100K straight to 2 million. Good luck to em and all and I hope that they can produce something worthy of being 2 million, and more importantly that people buy it. It should be pretty epic if they do given their track record of producing very good drivers cars.

Why? Do you think Colin Chapman will sue them?

No. Do you?
It just seems a strange idea to suggest calling this new car a name so similar to another in their historical and potential future range.
