Volkswagen Up GTI | Spotted

VW's souped-up city car is good value when new. Secondhand, it's a steal...

This time last week we came across a former PH longtermer in the classifieds, a car which we thoroughly admired at the time but decided we'd find even easier to enjoy with the added benefit of a year's depreciation. The same is undoubtedly true for today's Spotted, which in three-door format also spent a perfectly pleasant six months on the PH fleet last year - and is already available with a hefty discount.

When it joined us, Volkswagen's new Up GTI was burdened with a great deal of expectation for such a little car. On paper, similar kerb weights, power outputs and proportions meant that comparisons to the legendary Mk1 Golf GTI were inevitable, despite the standard Up's city car billing making for a decidedly different starting point. Once driven, it soon became clear that filling such sizeable shoes was perhaps an unfair job - but that didn't detract from its true appeal.

The peppy 1.0-litre turbo three-pot provided plenty of mid-range torque, making for a zippy and nimble machine which never failed to improve a daily London commute. And, while its six-speed manual transmission may not have been the slickest ever fitted to a sports car, it did offer the tactility that any good driver's car should. Fuel economy frequently in the 40mpg+ region certainly didn't hurt its cause either. It felt in its element during this sort of urban, light to light, junction to junction driving. While not a B-road blaster in the truest GTI tradition, as a sporty city car the Up GTI excelled.

If there were any other stumbling blocks to recommending Up GTI ownership, the biggest was that 'our' car cost a fiver over £16,000 as tested. That may not be an enormous amount by modern standards, but for such a relatively basic machine - and compared to a standard Up's circa £10,000 entry point - it seemed a lot. Which is where today's Spotted comes in. At £11,692 it's nearly £4,500 cheaper than our test car - the cost of an upgraded sound system on something more expensive - but more than a quarter of the car's original value at this end of the market.

If the 13,000 miles showing on the odometer are an issue, then there are of course alternatives with few miles and lesser discounts - this £13,000 car with 2,000 miles looks like a good option. But it's hard to argue with the GTI's appeal at this price. Sure, we would go for two doors over this car's five - though the added practicality will certainly appeal to some - but other than that this one-year old example looks pretty much perfect. All you have to do is stick your phone in the holder, and go enjoy yourself.

Although I'm not in the market for a car from this class, I'm sure this would be an absolute hoot!

No mention of the fact VW no longer make the Up GTI anymore... so used, or a very limited remainder of dealer stock is the only way to go.

I wouldn't wait too long, was reading a thread the other day stating they are about to be/have been withdrawn from sale.
Happy to be proved wrong here, as i think they’re a superb car.

Already gone, I think I read the same thread.

OT but at present I have two fairly similar cars; my long term plan is to change to a big silly estate and a cheap little nippy car.

Test drove one a week or so back - not currently possible to place a factory order. Unclear if this is permanent or due to forthcoming model changes - all a bit mysterious and off putting. Decent little car but not as good as my old Lupo GTI.

Not seen that thread so could anyone enlighten me/us as to why it’s been withdrawn?
Poor sales or is it to do with WLTP or whatever it’s called...?

I think its a general move to electric rather than petrol for new vehicles.

Last November I took my 16 plate golf tsi in for a service. The loan car they gave me was an up beats. The 90bhp jobbie. Hideous red mirrors on black body work, white interior made of plastic. But I didn't notice any of that after I started actually driving it. It truly was the most fun I'd had in a car for many, many years. It shot through gaps that looked impossible, it stuck to the road like prittstick, and changed direction like a fly. I could only imagine what an extra 25 horses, bigger wheels and lower springs would feel like. I wanted one so badly. So, this year, in February, the chap I deal with at my local VW dealer called. He had a brand spanker gti, in tungsten ready to go. He also had a 16 plate polo gti. I took both for a spin. Loved em both. About the same price, same insurance etc. But the up I'd have to wait for a few weeks, to get a 19 plate. The polo I could have immediately. I took the polo. Did I make a mistake? Oh bugger. Did I?

I see my post was edited by one of the moderators for attempting humour by putting LGBT after WLTP.
Not sure how it could be offensive,,my daughter who is firmly ‘bi’ laughed at it, my step daughter and brother in law are all firmly gay and we are going to a gay (lesbian) wedding next weekend.
Getting a bit fed up with thought police to be honest.
Would the Mod have been offended if I’d put BLT and, unbeknown to me they were Jewish???
Anyway, I too had a lower power version on loan (albeit a Skoda) and concur with how much fun it was to drive
To me they are a ‘just’ car; just enough power, just enough roadholding and just big enough for most occasions.
I’ve not driven the GTi but I’m firmly in the camp of considering one as an ‘everyday’. Just let them drop a few more ££££ first...

This one is a grand cheaper than the one in the article, and has lower mileage too.

But silly me; it's not in the PH classifieds wink

Well, it's not in the PH ads, so, no. It won't go.

Taking mine in for its 2nd service on Friday with 18k on the clock. Red, 5dr, black roof.

I’ve owned some expensive stuff in the past, and its not the most refined thing, but so much fun for what it is.

Have had a deposit on Model 3 since 2016 but yet to pull the trigger (would be performance one if i do) and wondering if I should bother!?

I like this over a golf in the same way I like a mx5 over a z4 but I also like a Bentley continental so that's weird. Maybe I am on the right website smile

Great car and with that engine no doubt you can remap it to a far higher state and fit suspension to give it a go kart feel. If I was 18 again....

The thing is with small cars they are chuckable on B roads and being small always seem to be going faster than they are.

Spotted this

Still a brilliant car. Looking at mileages some of them are getting into LandCruiser territory, 122k, 156k .... not bad for a small car that was made to costs.

The UP has carried the Lupo GTi flame well considering how manufacturers bend to modern rules and regs.

I bought one back in February, it is a great car, it is really spacious for those in the front and has the usual VW feel of solidity. I think I paid £13.6 k with 1200 miles on it. It still feels like it was superb value for money & benefits from being quite rare.

The only let down is the slightly crashy suspension, although I understand that the stock tyres magnify this problem, as they are designed for maximum mpg rather than comfort/handling.

My daily for the last 8 years has been a C63, the fuel economy on the UP is a revelation by comparison and the UP is plenty fast enough for most journeys.

Seems slightly bonkers that you can’t order a new one now!?

I’ve had Goodyear Eagle F1s (205 width) on mine for the past 7 months. They are a massive improvement (particularly feel on turn in), but they don’t solve the crashy rear suspension. I’m planning on sticking Bilstein B6 shocks on the back.

what are they like motorway mpg?

I was looking at the polo BlueGT which seems like it'll be more 'refined' on the motorway.

Which led me to look at the golf r-line tsi evo, however they're about 4-6k more than the polo.
