Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5 sells for record sum

Working Bond car went for £5.26m at RM Sotherby's Monterey Auction

A number of impressive lots went under the hammer at RM Sotherby's Monterey Auction over the weekend, but none more so than this record-breaking Aston Martin DB5. As one of the four cars modified to 007-spec for Sean Connery's use in Goldfinger, original estimates had placed its value somewhere between $4-6 million, but it smashed even those lofty expectations, selling for $6,385,000.

That makes it the most expensive Bond car ever sold by quite some margin, beating the previous holder - another of the four Goldfinger cars - which went under the hammer for $4.2 million back in 2010. It also makes it twice as costly as Aston Martin's modern recreation although, unlike those new cars, this 1964 machine is road legal.

As far as on-screen appearances go, however, the 21st century replicas have just as much heritage as this car does. It may have been built to the same specification as the original film cars, but was in fact created by the studio for the US promotional tour of Thunderball. So while it comes complete with fully-functional bulletproof screen, oil slick sprayer, smoke screen and pop-out prop machine guns, as well as an ejector seat and in-dash radar, none of them were ever operated by 007 himself.

Nonetheless, the record-breaking DB5 is in immaculate condition, having recently undergone an extensive restoration at Roos Engineering in Switzerland, one of just 13 facilities worldwide appointed by Aston Martin as a Heritage Specialist. How extensive, you ask? Well it took four years, during which time the car was subjected to a thorough once over, meaning that it drives and functions as well as Q would expect, and ensuring it can continue to enthrall Bond-lovers for years to come.

"...the record-breaking DB5 is in immaculate original condition, having recently undergone an extensive restoration at Roos Engineering in Switzerland..."

Isn't that a bit of a contradiction? It's not original if it's been restored?

Cool car nonetheless and a nice bit of history.

Good point, I meant its condition has been restored to how it was originally I suppose, have fixed it now though!

No mention of the complete and utter poo shower surrounding the sale of the Nazi Porsche prototype at the same auction, then? Hmm, could it be that RM Sotherby's [sic] is a PH advertiser?

Many moons ago, my old man was working on an interior of a DB5 (back when they were selling at around £100k, showing you how long ago this was). He was sorting the headlining and interior, being a trimmer.

I remember fussing around with the dog at his unit, generally being a teenager (I may have been 12-14ish). On losing my balance, I slammed backwards into the door of the DB5, creating a teenager-sized dent in it.

Not too sure how they sorted it, but by all accounts they managed it. Also went arse-first into a Sunbeam Alpine (I think?) hard-top, leaving a nice big ol' dent in it.

I didn't hang around the unit much after that, surprisingly :P

On the DB5 - it was awesome back then, from my young perspective anyway. Pretty sure i remember the dealer buying for around £75k, spending about £10-20k refurbishing various parts (paintwork, interior etc) then selling for IRO £125k. Easy money back then, not a patch on what they're worth these days though.

Because when writing an article about a vintage Aston Martin, one must mention a Nazi Porsche prototype that's completely unrelated in any way, shape or form to this car (when in fact the Nazi Porsche is mentioned in a linked article about the auction itself).rolleyes

I can imagine the fun going through customs on a European tour ! Especially with the imitation handgun in a hidden drawer.

I have enough trouble as it is - stopped at Eurotunnel a few years ago in a new sportscar as my passport had been flagged as being involved in an armed robbery! They were very pleasant and after 30 mins of delay and no cavity searches they let me on my way.
