Coca-Cola 911 RSR | Pic of the Week
Coke hasn't been on a racing Porsche since the 962; now it's back for Petit Le Mans, and looking better than ever
Porsche has form in bringing back iconic racing liveries, what with the Pink Pig and Rothmans homages at Le Mans a couple of years ago. Now, as the final IMSA race of its 50th anniversary year approaches, the 911 RSR will feature another historic paint scheme, the Coca Cola Wave made famous in the 1980s.
Petit Le Mans takes place from October 9-12th at Road Atlanta, with both works RSRs - Nick Tandy, Patrick Pilet and Fred Makowiecki in one, Earl Bamber, Laurens Vanthoor, and Mathieu Jaminet in the other - sporting the Coke ribbon. It carries particular significance at Road Atlanta, given the circuit originally opened with some funding help from Arthur Montgomery Junior, then president of the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
The Porsche link to Coca-Cola is much better known, with Bob Akin-prepared 962s running Coke liveries for seven years in North American motorsport - the Sebring 12-Hours win of 1986 is regarded as its best-known victory. Sadly footage of that race is hard to come by, but you can see here for a recent vid of a 962 in action.
Anyway, bring together a great livery, glorious sunshine and a GTLM racing car doing a burnout, and you've the makings of an ideal desktop wallpaper. So that's what we have! Select your resolution below and enjoy - it's less than three weeks until the race...
