Lamborghini Urus Performante in the works

Does the Urus need a go-even-faster model? Or a rescue version?

Well this is a shock. Who’d have guessed that Lamborghini would be right in expecting a drastic increase in global demand following the introduction of its Urus? Borrowing the formula established by group stablemate Porsche, the company was busy expanding its Sant'Agata Bolognese site long before the SUV was revealed and now, with production in full swing, the 650hp brute accounts for more than half of Lambo’s output. In some markets, such as India, it accounts for considerably more. As far as individual model launches go, this has been a very significant one.

It therefore comes as little surprise to learn that Lamborghini is set to ‘Performante’ its sole SUV, even if that means slapping the highly regarded track-honed moniker onto by far its fattest model. The temptation to cash in on Urus demand must be too hard to resist; indeed, Lambo chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani recently told Automobile Magazine that producing a Performante “will be [the] target also for the Urus”. The numbers speak for themselves, even if for some, the juxtaposing concept of a lightened, track-focussed SUV will be a pill too large to swallow.

But the Urus is to others their first interaction with a Lambo. They don’t think of Performante the way we do – as the most involving Huracan variant yet produced. Although something still tells us that Reggiani’s engineering team will ensure the Urus Performante is appropriately Lambo lairy. An output of close to 700hp from that twin-turbo V8 and even-firmer chassis seem like likely first steps for the future model.

Our snappers haven’t yet caught sight of a Urus that fits the bill for such a machine, suggesting it’s still some way from being finished. They have noticed Lambo’s new, eye-catching support vehicle for its ‘Ring fleet, however, in the form of the black and yellow Urus Rescue Car you see here. With a winch, roof LEDs, bars and a spare wheel, it’s as eccentric as you’d hope a Lambo workhorse would be. And does a fine job of reminding us that Lambo’s creations need not only be a product of sales and marketing decisions, but also just plain old fun.

Is it too much to ask that you type out "Lamborghini" once, save it to your clipboard, then Paste it in whenever you feel the misguided temptation to abbreviate the name of a well-respected car manufacturer?

Funny, with all this talk of fake exhausts and fake noise etc, it occurred to me that the Urus is, given that it is basically an Audi with a Lamborghini badge on it, basically a sort of fake Lamborghini.

It's an entire fake car.

Which Audi has the same brakes, suspension set up, engine and gearbox mapping, interior and exterior as this?

I see more and more of them around and I think they look fantastic. I am pretty sure they're a great steer for road use, particularly if you have a family.

If you must, then a Stelvio Quadrifoglio Nring is just as fast and 1/2 the price.

A true family camper. It has a trampoline on its roof, an awning on the side and a bull bar on the back in case you reverse into a herd of cows. Camouflaged paint as well. Fantastic !

Careful now, or the SUV luvvies will be along shortly to tell you off for that sort of comment.

They will no doubt also say that although they support the freedom of personal choice to drive whatever ridiculously large (never to go) off-road cock enhancer you desire, they don't support the freedom of personal choice to have an opinion regarding SUV's that happens to disagree with those of their own.

I fear they may be too late to the performance SUV party as everyone who wants one has already got one.

Oh, hang on, I meant to post that in the Aston Martin DBX thread.

I'm still wondering if they'll ever put the W12 in it. Bentayga's on the same platform, so presumably they could if they wanted to. Could probably mark it up by a hell of a lot for the privilege, too.

I think it's funny how idiots like you think you should decide what other people should and shouldn't spend their money on. I think an SUV which is quicker than a Merc SLS AMG around a track like the Nurburgring is pretty funny and impressive.

A quick google shows the SLS amg has a 'ring time of 7:30 to the Urus' 7:47?

Besides, it's not really a Lamborghini, anyway.
