Land Rover Defender | Pic of the Week

What's better than more new Defender? A Defender in a Bond film!

There's not much to get the general film-watching public going than a new Bond caper, and the excitement around No Time To Die - now with less than four months until its premiere - is bordering on the palpable. Now, of course, some of that will be due to it being Craig's last Bond flick, the Aston DB5 and the fact that 007 films always attract attention, but there's a suspicion that the role of the new Defender might be contributing a bit, too.

The old ones looked fantastic in Spectre, and you'd have to hope for more of the same in NTTD. Certainly the footage seen so far suggests it's in for typically unsympathetic use, the near-standard cars lapping up the punishment of a film role. Bring together Bond, Astons and Defenders - the BAD trio, if you will - and you can fairly guarantee audience attention - let's hope the reality lives up to the hype.

Until then we have this image from filming for our latest Pic of the Week wallpaper. Anyone who has seen the trailers will know that this seems to be the standard angle of attack for a Defender in the film, and it certainly looks dramatic whether as a still or film. 2020 will be a big year for the Defender, both on screen and off it; that's a lot less than a month away now, too...

Is that the new Defender? It's not particularly recognisable compared to the other models.

The old Defenders will still be doing this in 40 years time, when this "new" generation is rotting in a scrap yard.

You're right, I've never seen an old Defender rotting away!

Actually i'm making reference to the fact that enthusiasts won't be buying the new defender, it's just too much of a Chelsea tractor and will exceptionally costly to repair. If enthusiasts don't buy them, they'll end up in scrap yards.....

Not this again. It's nonsense. Even if you did fail to mention farmers, it's still nonsense.

How? JLR make some of the most unreliable cars in the world, and this thing is full of expensive gadgets, thus making it near impossible to repair at the roadside or back home on the driveway. The old defender had none of that nonsense. Within 10 years there will be so many expensive faults, that people will be scrapping them.

Now say something about leaf springs and fixing stuff with Whitworth spanners and hammers.

Too right. Just like the HMS Victory will still be perfectly seaworthy long after these new fangled HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carriers are rusting in some backwater.

Let me tell you, there's no way Lord Nelson would entertain all this "RADAR" and "automated small calibre gun" shennanigans.

But how do you know that? There are enthusiasts for things that aren't serious off roaders!

Lyonspride is right.

No self respecting enthusiast buys anything post 98.
Cause, air bags are awful, as is air con, heated seats, headed windscreen, working door seals, a heater that doesn’t feel like an afterthought and the ability to hold a conversation or listen to a radio above 40.

But then, defenders have plastic dashboards, door cards and windows that can be moved up/down and can have a turbo on them. A turbo!

Heathens the lot of them!

Us series 1 80” owners are the only enthusiasts.
The rest of you are just unwashed riff raff that are trying to pretend you have something. wink

Because it would take a serious mechanically minded enthusiast to keep a 20, 30, 40, 50 year old vehicle going, this new Defender simply won't be friendly to that, in fact I doubt there's much you could do it at home or at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. The simplicity of the original is the reason why you still see them today, so unless someone figures out how to rip out all trendy stuff that's bound to go wrong, the new one will never have the same following.

It's very amusing reading all these posts, but ya'll know i'm talking sense.
