BMW M4 CS | Spotted

The best F82 M4 there was, just run in and with more than £30k off...

While some debate will inevitably continue as to the merits of the BMW M3 and M4 CS, there's less equivocation around the price: they were too expensive. The tweaks that were employed over the contemporary Competition cars were certainly worthwhile, although they could never fully justify the premium for the many thousands asked over them.

It's been known for a little while now that very few customers will have paid the £89,130 list price for an M4 CS, and even when factoring in a discount, they look conspicuous value nowadays. Bear in mind, too, that the M2 CS is imminent - which shares a lot of M4 bits - as well as a new M4, and there could be an even better deal to be struck. Because nobody is going to want an M4 hanging around at £20k less than an M2 with the same engine, diff, gearbox and so on; furthermore, given what we've seen of 4 Series previews, there's every possibility of an uglier M4 replacing this one. And who wants to pay more money for that?

The CS was a realisation of what could be achieved with the F80/F82 architecture, near-perfectly blending the focus of the GTS with the Competition usability. The upgrades were pretty modest, truth told: undisclosed steering and suspension changes, reprofiled aero, Cup 2 tyres and an extra 10hp. But they culminated in much more enjoyable package, suggesting how close the car had been to greatness from the very start. The limits were higher, but trust was greater, the noise more authentic, the whole M4 experience both more thrilling but also more relaxing because of the additional confidence. There was a suspicion that the Michelins on a Competition car might have undone a lot of the work of the CS, but let's not spoil the story...

Given the ferocity of the outgoing M3/M4, and the divided response to that, it would be a surprise to find the next car be so aggressive; expect a more accommodating, less intense experience. Which would be a shame for those who did enjoy it, and for the CS - because it was the best exponent of that, and a genuinely great M car.

Still, those that are keen - and haven't been swayed by a C63, Giulia or RS5 - will be pleased to know that a CS is available from little more than £50k. This particular one appeals in San Marino Blue, showing 2,800 miles and on offer at Bentley of Newcastle for £55,000. Or the same money as a Competition with 1,000 miles; what was once a £28,000 premium is now much less, and certainly worth the extra given the experience on offer. Not forgetting the fact that the CS is much rarer, too.

So, although this isn't a car to be purchased as an appreciating asset, it does now finally look like the time to best experience just how good the CS is. Maybe it will take a softer, less polarising M3 and M4 for people to fully realise what was so good about this generation. Or perhaps it will be noticed when the rave reviews for the M2 CS come in, and these cars are still on offer for a third less money...

Amazing - almost £35k off for a two year old M4, that is almost unused !

Where as, a few weeks ago a three year old Giulia QF with 45k miles on the clock was for sale, for about £32k, having lost about £30k from new and it was implied that Alfa's depreciate !!!! and are still unreliable ....... surprised that the article didn't say they rust as well!

This BMW is great value motoring, just the heavy depreciation to contend with, and possible unreliability ......but when you get overtaken by the Giulia, will you be so happy?

But it isn't depreciating worse than any of the others. You're just asssuming the original owner paid £89k for this, which they almost certainly didn't.

Looks great, but Its an old model and doesn't look hugely different that a 25 grand bottom of the market 2014 normal M4, 89 grand for a M4 with some twddly bits, cant imagine many paid that ?

Almost all 4 Series and M4 derivatives seem to be suffering from massive oversupply on the market, prices are tumbling.

My local dealer has a Riviera Blue M4 Comp in the showroom for £74,500, its been there for months. I suspect it'll be there for a good bit longer, you can pick up delivery mileage M4 Comps for under £50,000.

BMW are running the very real risk of ruining the brand if they keep dumping cars on the market.

Agreed, I keep flitting between M4 or Mustang GT next, so was back on M4's last night, 737 available on Autotrader, seems quite a lot available for a fairly specialist model.

This is good for me, they will soon be in my price range and quite a bunch to choose from.

They are a volume manufacturer, they can't just turn the tap off. I don't think they're dumping anymore than they did 10 years ago. I don't think that damages the brand, as it is not perceived as a boutique brand, not that I care much about that aspect.

Classic case of ott overpricing new, inevitable discounts new and massive oversupply.

BMW M3s then M4s have always depreciated heavily and this is no exception.

That car will continue to depreciate eye watering amounts too.

Drove one back to back with a regular comp. Preferred the regular one. Bought it with a gigantic discount. It's fking great. Fin.

One has to remember that very often, the types of people who buy cars like this don't care about depreciation. To wealthy types, it's a piddling sum of money to lose. Buy it, enjoy it as a daily, pass it on. Rinse & repeat.

Personally I prefer the M3 anyway, but that's neither her nor there.

How do you define success for a car manufacturer? New car sales or kudos from internet forum beards?

Quite significantly under £50k. A colleague recently picked up a 69 reg M4 Comp in Yas Marina Blue with 120 miles on the clock for £45,500. To be honest, I thought he was lying until I looked on Autotrader.

Never a good sign over pricing on list and discounting down ,too many fast cars not enough roads to do speeds on .

Forgetting the price for a minute, that really does have to be one of the nicest 'standard' colours around on any car right now. Gorgeous!

I've taken a bigger hit than I'm used to on my M4. And I didn't even like it for the first 4 or 5 months. But it's really grown on me over the last 3 or 4 months.... They're a lot of excitement for this money.

M3CS looks better imho and in that glorious grey color. I am still keeping my eye out for further price drops as a lot of them seem to sit in the dealers for ages ...

Agree that the M3 looks better, especially from the rear end.

SAN Merino Blue is awesome though and one of the best colours available for modern BMW’s.

If anyone did pay anywhere near list they’ve taken one hell of a hit, but I’m guessing the original owner didn’t given that the demand for these was small until the discounts arrived.
