I have Apple Car Play in my new 2020 718. When in works it is brilliant - I can use TomTom which is much better than the built in navigation.

But sometimes, and usually first thing in a morning when I am in a rush, it just does not connect. I try unplugging the iPhone cable, turn off the PCM, turn off the engine and restart, even lock the car and unlock it, and yet nothing happens.

And yet next time I get in the car it works perfectly.

Any clues?

It's incredibly annoying, I have the destination already entered into my phone, and then - no car play. hope someone can help.

Make sure your phone is unlocked with the Face ID when you plug it in.

Yes, I’ve bought the very expensive (£30!) proper Porsche lead.

An ordinary one worked fine actually, but I liked the way the Porsche lead self coils and fits itself neatly into the armrest holder.

I’ve had issues when using non-official Apple leads with both my Mercedes E Class and 718 Spyder. I’d suggest using an Apple lead for a week and seeing how you get on.

I had this once before when the damm thing would just not recognise it at all. Firstly as others have said, make sure you're using a decent lead, and the phone is unlocked when you plug it in - don't plug it in unless the engine is already running.

I had it once before when the only fix was to pull the fuse for the PCM, wait 10 seconds and put it back, just needed a good hard reset.

if mine doesn't connect I find if I swipe up on the screen and type the pin to unlock - it sorts it.

95% of the time, mine works fine (cheap Amazon 4” cable). The other 5% CarPlay starts but says it has no internet connection. I have to restart my phone to fix the issue.

I'm on my second 718 and have this problem in both cars. Different phones over that duration too!

It's a Carplay thing rather than Porsche. Had the exact same issue on my old Golf R, Audi TT and latterly 991. Sometimes even unlocking the phone didn't work, and others CarPlay would randomly appear halfway into my journey or on other cases would drop off mid-journey.

Stopped using it after a while.
