Do Porsches suffer more road noise than other cars ? I know shouldn't be a factor for a performance car, and we like to hear the engine however excess noise can be wearing on long drives.

How do you find your cars after a few months of ownership?

Don't find them loud at all in standard guise, are you specifically concerned about it at idle? https://www.iacacoustics.com/blog-full/comparative...

They do suffer from quite a lot of tyre / road noise. Very surface and tyre dependent.
But heigh ho it’s a sports car not a limo.
My R8 is no better.

992 C2S, very very loud tyre / road noise at 70ish on some concrete sections, borderline unbearable. A30 around Okehampton is horrendous, fortunately only 2-3 miles then is back to normal. Which is still quite noisy compared with 'normal' cars.

My R8 is a lot quieter than my 996TT. Both are whisper quiet compared to the TVR's that I ran alongside/before them.

Never found it particularly tiring/annoying although the Tuscan was loud enough to make phone calls near impossible smile

Road noise on a 911 is pretty annoying on a long journey, but that’s the compromise - not really designed to be a motorway mile muncher... if you find yourself on concrete sections of the M25... save your conversation for later!!

Yep, road noise is the biggest issue. Very much a UK thing: once on the other side of the Channel it's not an issue at all.

Porsche engines are not so loud, and (most) sound pleasant.

Road noise is the biggest intrusion, but that is a factor of UK road surfaces and condition. Some countries use low-noise asphalt.

Wheel sizes and tyre brands can also make a difference.

Things were improved with the 991, but I gather from road tests that the 992 does generate quite a lot of road noise

I’m running Bridgestone’s on my 997 Turbo, be interested in the difference when switching to Michelin PS4S, which i’ll be doing in the Spring.

Currently the rolling tyre noise is pretty bad, borderline unbearable on concrete sections, but overall just a little annoying on a longer journey.

Agree with this, mine was boarder line of being to noisy.
Would have changed to Mich if I’d kept it. Think harder engine mounts don’t help, my previous C4S cab way way quieter as is current 991 4S cab.
I put DSC PASM control box on my turbo and the made ride more compliant for touring which helped.

Excessive road noise in the 992 got a mention in Metcalfe's review:

I had a 997 Turbo S, bought new and, yes, the road noise is quite tedious, made more prominent by the dull engine note.
Goodyear F1s have the lowest quoted noise levels.

I've got a nice Kline exhaust w/200c Cats to solve the engine note dilemma, it's the roar from the tyres that hurts my ears somewhat.

I had a 996 C4S (with M030) before moving to a 991.2 Carrera prior to the Turbo, and while the 996 was atrocious, the 991 on standard PASM was actually relatively quiet so suspension choice is also a factor. No doubt the sportier 911 models are rough on anything but smooth roads.

981 2.7 here. Not surprised to see that the highest. At decent cruising speeds, (80-90) it really is very loud, I have to turn PSE off for longer trips otherwise it's way too much.

However, a tradeoff I'm happy with as roof down on spirited drives it is an absolute drug. Mellifluous.

They're made for smooth German roads, not crappy UK ones.

I had a 964 Celebration which was the noisiest car - tyre noise - I have ever owned. Drove if from Skye to Leeds one Saturday and my ears were ringing for days afterwards.

993 C4S was quietest ever, followed by 996GT3.

Tyre noise is a huge issue with these cars IMO as when you get on a nice piece of tarmac, the noise almost disappears.

Funnily enough, mrsrlw Scirocco R is also unbearably loud on rough surfaces.

Road / cabin noise certainly seems to be a problem for Harry on testing the 992. I guess outside of the SUVs all Porsche sports cars are noisy...

Perhaps not entirely unique to the UK, but a lot of motorway surfaces here are dreadful to start with, which isn't helped by how much tire noise you get in most Porsches.

I find that driving in Europe is way, way less of an issue simply because of how much better the roads generally are. Still a loud car inside but as someone said above, they're not meant to ride like an S class Mercedes.

My 981 Boxster Black Edition was one of the noisiest cars I've owned roof up or down, along with terrible tyre noise, the PDK gearbox and sports exhaust (off even) also combined to give a terrible drone in 7th....so much so I used to drive the car in 6th even though the engine had slightly more noise.

My R172 Merc SLK55 is hugely different roof up or down, obviously roof up it should be better, but roof down cabin design causes much less wind noise, and there is little tyre roar from the 18 inch wheels, and there is absolutely no drone from the exhaust. Think tyre size and type is probably the biggest issue though.
