Met grabs itself a Lambo

Ultimate pursuit car breaks cover

This is the Met Police's new catch-you motor.

The 640bhp Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 will be at MPH'06 on the Met Police stand -- we hear that the 6.5-ltre V12-powered machine had to be hurried covered during the photo-shoot as it was in danger of causing traffic accidents.

However, the Met Police was at pains to say that the 211mph, £180,000 supercar hasn't been paid for with public money. But in the eight miles that the Met Police was allowed to drive it, it was stopped twice by other Met units, having committed no traffic violations. Have they nothing better to do?

The MPH'06 show starts this week.

Beats the usual dreary Volvo's they use.

Dont mind as long as its put to good use e.g. catching Chavs, transporting organs.

Reminds of a story years ago when a police force in an area suffering from a large number of joy riders, bought a Sierra Cosworth in order to catch them, but within a month it was stolen, joyridden around and then torched.

I aslo recall seeing a Police Esprit in Hamspstead years ago.

Yeah they just mock one up for car shows and the like as publicity, previously they have used a Gallardo though (usually the work of PHer Lambocop).

I actually wish the police used these. That way, all you'd need to do to evade capture would be to drive down a road with speed bumps. You'd need nothing more to outrun it that a Suzuki Jimny.

Bit like escaping certain death from daleks... take the stairs.

Well it got you talking about it so i guess it works.

Personally i dont see the problem in raisng awareness of Traffic, it is after all a vastly diminishing unit.

It also doesnt cost the Met police anything to stage up these "publicity Stunts" - a LOT of hard work goes on nehind the scenes to organise - as i'm sure Lambocop will be along in a minute to explain all.

DB9. And before anyone mutters the usual nonsense, it's still made in Newport Pagnell I believe and therefore British.

Of course, the Italian police really do have a Lambo..

They did this before at the Gumball launch in london with a Gallardo. I would love to see this chasing me in my rear view mirror.

It's not a very good article IMO, it does imply that the Met now have a Lambo, which they don't, and secondly what on earth does "to be hurried covered" mean - Either the writer is having a bad day or the proof reader has a day off! There should be an adverb there, "...to be hurriedly covered.." would be better but still sounds inelegant

What is the point in this?

To raise awareness of traffic cops? I think most people are aware of them.

And why is there always a police stand at motorshows? Is it just a recruitment drive?

Agree. Snooze snooze deja vue etc. Police playing with toys again under the umbrella of promotion. Simply refer to the string of negative comments last time and the complete irony of them using speed and glamour to attract punters to then preach their dum speed kills message. We all know that they would rather us drive around in electric wheel chairs.

Police need to focus on regaining respect and trust of the public through sensible policies, efficient allocation of resource and priorities and being equitable and consitent in their approach. Dare I say it back to basics.
