Lambo Takes On Jet

Reventón races Tornado in Italy

Is that flying Stig?
Is that flying Stig?
In case anyone had missed the aircraft influences on the Lamborghini Reventón, the Italian firm rammed the point home by pitching the car against a jet fighter.

The pilot of a Tornado aircraft [A200-A] and a Lamborghini test driver challenged each other to a race on a 3000 metre long runway at the Ghedi (Brescia) military airport.

The idea was to showcase the car in front of a host of international TV networks, and also remind those who might have been asleep for the past month or so that the Reventón has ‘aeronautic styling’.

The car was designed by the Centro Stile Lamborghini and draws inspiration from modern fighter jets.

The Lambo did take the lead early on but the Tornado caught up in the last few metres, taking off and flying over the Reventón that was going at a speed of over 340 km/h (211 mph).

There are only 20 Reventón cars available, each with a price tag of 1 million euros plus taxes.

All are already sold and will be built and delivered in 2008.

Meanwhile the Reventón has also won the ‘Most Beautiful Automobile in the World 2007’ award this month in the special models category, of the award ‘L’Automobile più Bella del Mondo’ (The Word’s most Beautiful Automobile).

The decision was announced by an international panel chaired by Italian visual arts critic Bruno Alfieri.

Members of the panel were well-known international representatives of the automotive and design industries.

Pity it wasn't against the F-22 Raptor that inspired it. I assmume the Italians don't have any. The Americans probably refuse to supply them given their slightly confused allegiances of the past.

No one but the Americans have the F-22 because its export sale is barred by federal law.

You think the tornado was designed 50 years ago? Oh dear. The first test mule only flew in 1974.. it entered service in finished form in June 1979. It's actually designed for supersonic low level flight, and is extremely fast at low levels.

No, it's not. It SHOULD be close to retirement.

Since the end of the cold war there is very little demand or need for high speed jets, given the future warfare is likely to be low tech insurgency like the taliban air superiority is less important against a distributed guerilla force as vietnam proved. Apaches are more use than jets as you are more likely to need close air support than strategic fighter capability.

Its 70's technology and very out of date. The RAF have already started to retire some variants as Typhoon comes into service.

This is in Italy yes?

Not really a fair comparison as the jet was probably in reverse.
