corsa redtops- anyone got any decent advice on running them or had any memorable experiences in one?

Get yourself over to http://www.corsa-c.co.uk/forum/index.php. Few people have done Z20LET and C20LET conversions (2 litre turbos). The Z is the newer engine, where as the C is the older one, which some say has a higher tuning potential

be careful!

there are lots out there some good and some bad, my mate bought one cheap but it was very fast, it had some kind of uprated suspension and brakes but they had just chucked some aftermarket bits on and it was one of the worst handling cars i have ever driven!

he did have it rolling roaded at 181bhp though (bike carbs) and it was very quick in a straight line, but because nothing else was done to it the shell started cracking at the b-pillars because it couldn't cope with the power

have seen other ones that are brilliant though! but they need to be done properly!

i would recomend some decent bilsteins or something similar for suspension and some good front brakes, be careful with upgrading the rear brakes though as i have put mk2 astra gte discs on my mk1 astra redtop and if i brake hard i can actually spin the car by locking the rear wheels up (curiously the handbrake wont hold it on a hill though!)

also if you want to run more than the standard 150bhp i would look seriously into seam- or stitch-welding the shell to stop it falling apart, plus getting a quaife lsd in there wont hurt!

finally, if you go with bike carbs be careful, as they are located right by the fresh air intake into the cabin and because they chuck fuel in at a rate of knots you end up being gassed out the cabin!

there is nothing better though when you are in a standard red corsa with steel wheels and a 12v badge on the boot and you overtake people at double the motorway speed limit!

Redtops are ok, but most are old high milers that have been thrashed all their lives and are consequently running on borrowed time.

A better option would be a v6 conversion, more power, more torque, more driveability and more reliability not to mention they sound mint.

Ultimate would be a c20let turbo conversion but again be careful as many have high miles and bleed valves on them so are also running on borrowed time.

All corsas crack on the B pillars, its a design fault and has nothing to do with too much power. if your going for over 200bhp or a V6 its worth having the engine bay seam welded though to stop it cracking at the bulkhead.

My advice would be sell the astra and buy a mint 1.0 shell as new as you can get and then pay someone to put either a 3.2 V6 in or a C20let thats just been rebuilt - then you know its been done right!

join up to corsasport.co.uk, asuming your putting one into a corsa B

my thread is somewhere on here, with my slow progress of building an xe on throttle bodies and putting it into my B

its a great usable car, but be warned that 20 year old engines done take to constant abuse to well, and a "freshen up" is the least that should be done IMO

the rest is very simple, theres a few guys on migweb and corsasport that now make a plug in a and play loom, which now makes the hardest bit of the conversion very very easy smile

the v6 is a bit of a nightmare, as the maninfold needs cutting and bodging, and you have to remove the bulkhead or "move it" to make it fit, quite amasuing to drive though, but the extra weight does the corsa no favours

also pre 97 cars seem to suffer with b piller cracks, and ive never seen a corsa split at the bulkhead through power/abuse

the only "weak" point is the lower cross member area, and many companies make a weld on streghtaning kit, which sorts out that issue
