Hi all,

I bought a focus 2.0 ghia (mk 1 zetec e engine) about a year ago with 103,00 0 miles on the clock, i was a bit dubious about the high mileage as I do 25000 a year and need the car to last, well thankfully 30,000 miles later the car is still in tip top shape, absolutely nothing has gone wrong. I love the car and want to run in into the ground, my question is how long do these engines realistically last? I do my own servicing and change the oil every 5000 miles with quality stuff, and keep my eye on the cambelt so under these conditions is it fair to expect it to last till 200 thou? anyone out there with a zetec e with high miles? plz let me know, thanx

They will last quite a while... I know a lad who has one of the first focus's in the country and its still running fine!

As long as it gets regular services (and do keep a good eye on that cambelt) it will last quite a few more years i would expect

How much is a belt kit fitted? I bought my 1.8 with 90k on, theres a stamp saying it was done at 50 but is it worth doing for peace of mind? ;/

not sure how much a belt fitted costs, (the previous owner did mine), but i would estimate around 200 quid, alot cheaper than a complete engine rebuild! If yours was done at 50,000 it would prob be ok till around 100k, (ford recomend a new belt at 100k but my haynes manual says 60k, either way your alright for now, but if you want peice of mind it wont harm to get a new one

Just got my (second) belt change done on my 1.8 focus at 100k miles. It cost about £180 all in from nationwide so well worth doing for peace of mind imo.

frown mine has just gone at 76k 2.0 ghia 2001.

Its at the garage now and they say probably cambelt or tensioner, and possible valve damage. They are going to start on Monday so will know for definate then, but I'm sure there will be damage as the day before, I did hear some tapping from the engine.

hindsight I would have got it changed at 50k.

I've been quoted £300 for cambelt, but if valves damaged then £700, does this sound about right?

apart from this I've had 8 good years of some great driving smile

Must admit I thought the cambelt was due at 50k or 5yrs...

Properly maintained, Focus engine should easily see 250k

I was in a 229k Focus estate taxi last week, you could tell it needed suspension but the engine seemed fairly strong

Seeing a lot of this on Focus & all zetecs. Ford say the belt okay for 100k or 10 yrs but the tensioners often fail at 70-80k so we advise them at 60 or 8 yrs

They always do the valves but on the 1600 they tend to break the tops of the pistons as well meaning a new engine.

You dont say which engine yours has but £300 is the dearer end for a belt change with £700 for just valves expensive as well but depends what else they will include for that price.

its the 2.0i 16v Zetec engine

got a call from the garage today and valves and pistons are all FUBAR'd frown they've quoted me £14 -£1500 for rebuild frown

So if anyone knows of an engine going spare or any recommendations on getting it done cheaper, I'd be grateful...

I'd be more tempted with a scrapper engine for a couple of hundred and either rebuild it or take a chance with it. Even with labour I'd say you should have a fair bt of change from £1k.

Sorry to hear this, T. No joy on a scrappy engine?

Mine was done about 8k ago when the water pump went. Must admit it wasn't something that was on my radar so glad now that I did.

i met a guy once that was running the first gen refresh model mondeo 2.0 16v zetec estate as his taxi. he had done at the time 498K! i thought that was impressive, but the interior was was even better, unmarked, and very clean. -drivers seat was looking tired though (big chap!) the body work was in excellent condition as well.

i had to ask the question what had he replaced in that time,

2 alternators
1 starter motor
2 clutches
tyres/brakes etc
and quite a few tensioners/belts!
