Pic Of The Week: Wing'ed Wonder

Who do you think you are - Stirling Moss Jnr?

Going 'retro' doesn't always work where four-wheeled exotica is concerned, but if you had any doubts about the desirability of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing perhaps this image will help to dispel them.

Picture yourself hunkered down behind the wheel of this 'instant classic', gazing keenly over the sculpted bonnet as you glance the apex of your favourite corner... feeling the thickly rimmed wheel pulling back to the centre under your finger tips... the rear of the car squatting as you unleash the might of that 6.3-litre AMG motor...

You're a goddam hero, and you know it!

What I find interesting is the "Retro" trend.

First Motorcycle manufactures did it a few years ago and now sell more retro bikes than sports bikes.

Then Euro box makers did it with the Mini, Fiat 500 etc.

Then the good ole boys did it with the Stang, Challenger and Camero.

Now this high end version that is the first Merc I actually like the look of.

So what is next?

Do they do a manual box option since they've gone retro with the looks? smile

Yes, the car looks good but the headlights don't look right to me either. This is the one car where MB's two round headlights would have fit in nicely, completing the retro look while staying within the firm's modern design language. Yes, I know they just changed that back to squared off headlights, but for this car, it would have been sensational. Or they could have gone a different direction, but what they have done is just bizarre looking and clashes with the rest of the car's lines.

I may be wrong but doesn't this just boil down to something that is more or less just a hardtop SL63 'Black series' with retro styling and some trick doors?

No no no no no no. Awful. The only reason this pic looks moderately good is because the angle and reflections on the car disguise the hideous shoulders that run down the length of the car and don't fit with the design at all. NO!

The recessed 'vertical' headlights under the lamp covers are a look back to this:

The new one looks great.

Well, these car designers may lack "new" ideas, but they've got to produce cars / bikes to those who've the £ to buy; thus perhaps the retro designs appeal to old geezers (like me) who remember the originals and can finally afford to buy a new one..............albeit a bit late!
