2002 Discovery Td5 Tuning?
Discussion
Hi Chaps,
I've Gone and got myself a nice Discovery TD5 ES 7 Seater Auto. It’s a great car and does all the things I bought it for, except it could do with a bit oomph! and use a little less fuel while it’s a about it.
I've been looking various re-mapping firms online, and via L/R forums. A lot of people recommend TD5 alive, but they are based up north, and I am in Kent. I have read about a "by post remap" but to be honest although I'm a Motor Trader Re Mapping is new territory for me, and I'd like to take my car to where it will be worked on, and not trust this By Post method.
I have found a firm called Austec Racing which is based in crawley, which quite close to me.
Anyway has anyone got any experience of:
- The firm I mentioned in crawley?
- Any other remapping place in Kent/West Sussex?
- of re mapping TD5's generally? What can I expect?
- Or anything else useful you think might be good to know?
Thanks!

Also, being a 2002 model it will have a catalyst in the downpipe.
This will serve as a restriction for the escaping turbo gases.
From around the end of 2000, TD5's had a higher fuel pressure but also the catalyst in the downpipe.
If you remove the catalyst downpipe and fit a downpipe that has no catalyst you will considerably "brighten up" the engine.
This can be seen on the TD5Alive website and is a cheap upgrade (LandRover even supply a non-cat downpipe for earlier models)
I would suggest removal of the EGR also as all this really does is start clogging up the inlet manifold with carbons.

Thanks for your help so far chaps.
The Map Sensor, is it under the big plastic engine cover?
At the moment, its in having some work on the ABS, I think it may end up needing the ABS pump replacing, which I understand to be a comman failure.
When its out I'll clean the Map Sensor(when I find it!) first then look at the EGR valve. What I dont understand about this EGR valve, if its such an easy and comman fix, and all it seems to do while its in there is cause problems. Why did Land Rover fit it? What is its puppose? and therefore what will be missing if I blank it off?
Has anyone used RCV (Landrover specialist) in Paddock Wood, Kent? They offer tuning on their website. http://www.rcv.co.uk/index.asp

Rather than start a new thread...
Has anyone got anything to add to this? Or any more up to date recommendations?
I guess there haven't been huge leaps in the field of Td5 tuning since this thread was last live but I thoughy I'd asked before commiting a load of time and money into a trip to the wastelands of the north* for a tune
*I'm on the south coast near Poole now.

Had mine done at JE engineering (Midlands)
Worth every mile of the drive from Southampton and every penny of the cost.
Cheers

I had my td5 upgraded by je when it was less than a month old, couldnt stand it as stock. especially the terrible low rpm power delivery..
had the full stage 2 job with remap, intercooler, filters etc. made a massive difference soo much more drivable, everyone who has driven a stock td5 then jumped in mine notices in about 20 ft..
its done 85k now and no way would i still have the car 10 years later if it had been stock
