That light is the PATS light (passive anti theft) The light flashes like most cars to tell you the system is active. As in you cars security system. That light tells you what the system is doing and flashes a certain number of times to tell you that there is a fault with the system. If the system is functioning normally the light will flash every 2 seconds when the ignition is switched off.
Many thanks for such a lovely reply. It has no pattern to the flashing, sometimes stops and starts again, continuous ... it seems unpredictable.

Download the manual from here : http://www.focusplanet.com/#Focus Owners Manual

See if you can find it in there, pics of dashboard and warning lights are at the very start...

All I can see between the indicator lights is the speedo!!!

So you're driving along and a warning light flashes on, but because you don't know what it is you just keep driving anyway?

Ah, just noticed you're female. wink

Edited to add: red warning lights usually = something which could be dangerous.

Well I wouldn't of thought there is an issue if its not flashing at least 11 times. This is the minimum amount of times it will flash to tell you there is a fault. If your central locking, immobiliser and alarm are all functioning as they always have, I would think all is well.

Why does the fuel cap being on the right mean it is a US car???

You'll often have the spaces for certain bulbs where they use the cluster in different markets.

Does the same light also come on yellow?

Fords have lights that are yellow when slightly cold outside as a warning and then red when it is very cold. It the light shaped like a snowflake?

That'll be my only suggestion. If it is anything else I am afraid I am of no help at all!

Whoosh.

Perhaps you need a warning light to check your cap after filling up with petrol?

wink
