TVR 'Remanufacturer' Under Scrutiny

TVR Motors officially unimpressed by US company offering 'federalized'(sic) Sags for sale

Hot on the heels of our story that PistonHeads 'hero brand' TVR is making a comeback with US V8 power later this summer, comes news from the US that someone else is thinking on the same lines already.

A pic from the US website advert

A new ad on US website carsforsale.com is offering what it calls 'remanufactured' Sags and Tuscans, apparently with a hole under the bonnet for the V8 (or other engine) of the buyer's choice.

Check out the ad here

While a US V8-engined TVR is a terrific idea in principle, we're not sure whether there's going to be much mileage in this new independent effort to make it happen.

That's because PH has just spoken to a very senior representative of TVR Motors: "We'd like to make clear that this has nothing whatever to do with us, and it appears to conflict strongly with what TVR is trying to achieve in future," Mr Smolenski's co-director at TVR Motors' James Oxley told PH in a telephone call from Austria. We further understand that TVR intends to closely scrutinise the operation to ensure its own interests are appropriately protected.

James wouldn't be drawn any further on that, or TVR Motors' own plans to relaunch, but has promised to keep PH abreast of developments as they happen. So we've had to curb our excitement for now, but naturally we'll keep you posted as soon as we hear anything.

Anyone else getting tired of Smolenski's continued sniping and posing without actually DOING much?!?

Besides which...what can an OE manufacturer do about an independent company taking 2nd-hand examples of their cars and putting a new engine in it?!? That happens all the time (V8 & rotary MX-5s spring to mind) in the tuning market...surely this is just the same thing?

So... £60,000 for a rolling chassis. No mention of what else the car comes with. Hmm.. I can see that one working well.

Me.

There is no TVR
Its a brand name, nothing more.

And who decided TVR was Pistonheads 'hero brand' ?
They were struck off my Hero list a good few years ago, along with a few other people on here I'd bet.

I wonder if he knows what the plans are, all this suspicion and rumour without actually telling anyone anything is just so tedious and boring I wish they would just put up or shut up!

The cynical part of me thinks they're only doing this to shift the partially built ones, when you compare a New TVR from the "NEW" factory at £90k, wouldn't you rather have one from Str8 Six for considerably less?

I really hope the intention is to establish TVR as a car maker again, then its sold to someone who actually knows what they're doing, the sooner NS realises he's not going to get the money he pumped in back, the better for any attempt to resserect TVR on a smaller scale.

I thought that also. What next? shpub to stop putting LSs in Cerbs?

It's got TVR another headline though.

Seen this post has great interest of all of 14 posts so far. Had this been 2000 and not 2010 things would have been a lot different. But TVR were not interested in their customers then and the situation has now been reversed in interest in this pretender

If it’s not made in Blackpool and has no influence by eiher Wilkinson or Wheeler then this vehicle is just a fascimile.

TVR have gone the end, its founder, its most influential owner, the factory, the poor displaced workforce all that’s left is a badge that is synominous with poor public image.

Sorry but true, a bit like Not Great Britain now.

If they ever do relaunch, their car is going to have to be AMAZING to overcome all the negative feelings that people have for the 'new' TVR. It would have to be on the sort of scale as what Nissan GTR did to 911 Turbo. Cant see it happening myself, but i will read the stories with interest when they appear.

If TVR actually made a car they wouldn't NEED to worry about anyone else.

Just a sign of weakness on TVR's part in my view. They have nothing and so see anyone doing something as a threat.

I plan to pop into Carmel Motorsports sometime next week and try and suss out whether there is anything to this. Like, do they actually have any donor cars or is it just an idea? As I posted elsewhere the idea of buying a secondhand TVR, gutting it, shipping the shell to the USA, fitting a Corvette engine and then selling a secondhand bitsa with a Corvette engine for double the price of a Corvette - with no factory backup is utterly bizarre. Having said that, if anyone is crazy enough to contemplate it I can't see what Smolenski can do to stop it.

No [sic] needed. "Federalized" is the correct spelling, with a z, on our (Yank) side of the pond.
