M6 Production Ends

Last V10 M car officially dies

It's over - the heavily built woman has sung. Production of the BMW M6 has officially stopped, and the naturally aspirated V10 is officially a memory.

The upshot of this means that PH is now the official custodian of an extinct species - we shall not see the like of editor Chris-R's PH Fleet M6 again once it leaves PH towers.

But although the V10 M6 is dead, an all-new 6-series is due next year, and it's probably a fairly safe bet that the new twin-turbo V8 that's due to power the 2011 M5 (and already shoves the X5M and X6M along the road) will at some point find its way beneath the bonnet of the next 6-series.

But the V10 is definitively dead and, while we won't mourn the passing of the clunky SMG gearbox that went with it, the death of the sonorous 500bhp motor is a sad loss. Requiescat in pace, etc...

Never actually been in a V10 M car, but what a spine-tingling engine. A loss to motoring.

RS4?

Can't even remember how long the current RS4 has been around. Might not have been long.

I've only driven an M6 once and it was a LHD one in France on some great roads but I struggle to like them. So complicated and heavy-handed and such huge performance but delivered in such an anaesthetised way. Not for me.

I still have mine. I might keep it permanently. Just an amazing engine. For all of the M6 faults, the M5/6 V10 was one of the greatest BMW engines of all time. I had mine delimited and ran it flat out in Germany. 7600rpm in seventh gear is a great place to be.

saddest thing for me as an M fan is the use of turbos in next generation...a great shame

Just going to check Dave to see if those were his EXACT words or a slight deviation of them...

The complicated thing came from Clarkson. Sure, iDrive was a mess, but you could set the car up in half an hour, one time. The M button was programmable for all your settings and you just hit it to engage. There was nothing particularly complex about the car. SMG was clunky but you could drive it smoothly once you got used to it. he car was not a track car and was underbraked for that purpose. I was and is a great and comfortable road car, and brilliantly quick.

The RS4 died a death about 2 years ago I think. They phased it out when the B8 A4 came in.

Like I said, I only drove one once but it didn't encourage me to persevere and felt far from comfortable on the twisty mountain roads. Maybe you have to acquire the taste.

I like mine a lot, perfect combination of daily driver and performance, in fact I'm half tempted to swap it in for one of these last of the line cars.

What does that correspond to in mph? Did you ever work it out?

BMW gave the M6 a good run out at Le Mans Classic, where one was thrashed around amongst a gaggle of M3s and was able to keep up. Sounded awesome and the driver was clearly making the most of rear wheel drive!

I've never driven one, but as a matter of principle that applies to any car, you've also got controls, ride and handling. There's no point having a legendary engine if it's connected to a car you don't like. I've yet to drive a BMW made post 2002 that I've actually disliked (they've all got great engines, and lovely RWD handling), but equally I've not driven one that I've loved - the controls and drivetrain (other than the engine of course) just tends to be just so obstructive and, well "difficult". I've been a passenger in a friend's 635i on a few occasions and didn't think much of it at all; a sentiment echoed by another friend of mine who's mate's got a 6 series. However, I'd love to try an M6 smilesmile
