What does a "liquid cooled infrasonic wave pulse gnerator" (as fitted to the front of this R8) do?

A google search reveals lots of speculation, everything from a radar jammer/electronic counter measure to a deer deterrent or night vision device.

Anyone know what it actually does or is the name just a red herring to hide its real purpose?

Mentioned 2.11 into this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXIzsU3AtBs

AFAIK, the idea behind it is, it disturbs the air in front of the car, so any radar guns aimed at the car, the radar waves get distorted and so plod cant get a decent reading

I think the idea is that it pulses out infrasound which encourages the driver in front to get out of the way - infrasound can generate feelings of unease/unpleasantness;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrasound

It wouldn't work as a radar jammer/distorter. I'm not convinced it'd work to do anything at all really...

That seems plausible, as in the video the guy says you dont want to stand in front of it

I'm not convinced a feeling of unease/unpleasantness would cause anyone to move over. You only need to watch the police camera programmes to see how many MLM simply don't use their rear view mirror. Would making them feel uneasy change that?

Perhaps its to use against the competition?!

From what I know it was on the Top Secret R8 which has a lot of toys like that on it. Iirc, it distorts speed traps so as they can't get a reading on the car from the front.

It also double's up as a microwave to heat up the Rustlers on a coast to coast.

They have to wait a year before they announce it (statue of limitations) but as the car has been around for 3 years, I think you're right.

I'll tell you what it does; nothing.

As for it's intended purpose, I haven't got a clue.

It liquifies everything in its path which re-solidifies behind it again. Thus you can drive like a total nutter and not worry about hitting anything or anyone or causing damage.

Or

It's a little vacuum for cleaning the road as you drive along.
