UPDATE, 03/08/2020:
If ever anything could be anticlimactic about the incredible AMG GT Black Series, it's confirmation of the price. It was recently suggested that the car might cost £335,000... and today that exact £335,000 RRP has been finalised. So there we go.
As for spec, we know at the moment that UK buyers will get the AMG Track Package - which brings a titanium roll bar and four-point harnesses - as standard; a no-cost option Comfort Package brings heated, electric seats in place of the buckets if you prefer. Wonder how popular that might be? Additional interior highlights include a standard Night Package, the AMG Performance steering wheel in 'Dinamica' microfibre and orange stitching. The latter, much like the seats, can be swapped to a more Mercedes option - black or grey - at no extra cost. There are nine AMG Magma Beam Paint colours to choose from.
And that's your lot for now, without any further specification details yet released. But then the Black Series wasn't going to need standard wireless CarPlay or an air ioniser to entice customers; they'll most likely already have their orders in, or will be placing them very soon. For those lucky souls, first deliveries begin in the autumn.
ORIGINAL STORY, AS REPORTED 24/07/2020:
AMG didn't need to paint the GT Black Series orange to get anybody more interested; even in GLA diesel silver it looked the nuts, mean and menacing and promising more from a track-focused Mercedes than we ever thought possible before. And we thought a lot.
But they have shown us an orange one, as part of the announcement that orders are now open for the 730hp Affalterbach bruiser. In Germany the Black Series is going to cost €335,240, or just about £305,000 at the current exchange rates. By some way of comparison, a 991 GT2 RS with a few thousand kilometres will typically cost about €360,000 in Germany, according to mobile.de.
As for the inevitable question on UK pricing, we're none the wiser just yet - the cost "hasn't yet been officially released" according to Mercedes Benz UK. However, it's been suggested that in the UK the Black Series will retail for almost exactly the euro price in pounds, with £330,000 the rumoured figure. While comparing new prices with limited run Porsches always feels somewhat of a fool's errand, it's worth noting that a GT2 RS cost £207,506 for those lucky enough to get their hands on one brand-new. But, wouldn't you know, a delivery mileage car from a Porsche Centre now costs... £335,000. Funny that. The new car's RRP is quite a lot more, notably, than the already-pretty-awesome £188,345 AMG GT R Pro as well; however, as the spec has alluded to, the Black Series is quite a lot more car...
The McLaren 765LT will surely also have to be considered as a rival for the Black Series; given the old 675LT was a quarter of a million five years ago, it's reasonable to expect that it's more powerful replacement might breach £300,000. Don't forget that just 35hp separate Mercedes and McLaren, too.
Finally, because in this instance there's just 10hp difference and AMG will no doubt have spent a lot of time assessing it, the Ferrari 488 Pista is very much still a contender at this money. For £330,000 a car like this one is available, with just 15 miles on the clock. The Black Series isn't going to be short of rivals then, despite its outrageous specification and telephone number price tag. It's certainly not short of potential, either, given what's gone into it. More details on UK availability when we have them.
