Speed cameras are to be used as a cut-price solution to road-building by the Government, it is feared.
The Government is reportedly looking to axe a series of road schemes because costs are spiralling out of control and costing £100million a mile.
The projects could be replaced instead with far cheaper ‘active traffic management’ schemes that would be linked to speed cameras.
This would include the use of variable speed limits and using the hard shoulder as an extra lane to control traffic flow.
Thousands more drivers are expected to be hit with speeding fines but the Government is said to believe that it is a far cheaper option that expenisive road building.
Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly is understood to be unveiling the plans when she publishes two major reports within weeks.
A spokesman for the Department for Transport told PistonHeads that there is an ongoing feasibility study into extending active traffic management schemes across the country and work is ongoing.
