It can be easy to forget at the moment, what with a new BMW seemingly launched every week, but the current G20 3 Series is absolutely back to its best in the compact exec segment. Arguably even more so as a Touring (or G21, if you didn't know), combining genuine estate practicality with the fabled 3 Series dynamics.
For those who need more, though, AC Schnitzer is on hand. Its latest work on the 3 Series Touring, available for 320i, 330i, M340i and 330d models, "shows that diversity and versatility in BMW tuning beyond the series knows no bounds".
While power packs are coming soon for the petrol models, the 330 diesel is already complete; from a standard 265hp and 427lb ft, AC Schnitzer claims its upgrade yields 315hp and 487lb ft. Which is quite a lot for a 3 Series diesel. By extension, then, an M340i should be in excess of 400hp...
Additional Schnitzer equipment includes new exhaust pipes, a sports suspension kit (for passively suspended cars) that decreases ride height by 25mm, and a beefier bodykit. As well as letting buyers "show that you are not in the mainstream", it's also said to contribute "special driving dynamics through improved downforce". Don't forget to select a new set of wheels while you're at it, to complete the overhaul.
Basically, then, for those who can see life in the executive estate yet, there are companies still willing to make them faster, sportier and more dynamic. As BMW continues its focus on performance SUVs instead of the more traditional wagon, don't be surprised to see the work of companies like AC Schnitzer become more popular to the committed few.
