DTM without Mercedes-Benz feels like Supercars without Holden or NASCAR without Chevrolet; for so long it has been so integral to the championship that it will be a very different spectacle without it. Still, with Formula E on the rise, that's
how it must be
Mercedes' departure is sad news though for fans of touring cars. While the racing cars have moved further and further away from production specification, having the three brands in DTM - albeit BMW for less time than the others - has always given their respective fans something to cheer on. Imagine the Premier League was just three teams and then one left - it would leave quite the void.
To mark the occasion, here we have some classic DTM footage featuring the legendary 190s taking on M3s, Audis and the rest between 1989 and 1992. It's a montage with some dubious music choices at points but, unlike so many of the rest, there is some engine noise allowed in too. And if you want nothing but engine noise, watch this video of an ex-Keke Rosberg 190. Who said four-cylinder cars can't sound good?
Anyway, the 'Legend of DTM Motorsports' vid features 190s in all sorts of excellent liveries being driven to within an inch of their life against tin-top opposition; it therefore makes for excellent viewing. Being a montage there is some gratuitous slo-mo, but then is it actually gratuitous when it features 190s and M3s? Probably not.
Enough from us. Sit back and enjoy some classic German touring cars. Mercedes, you shall be missed!
