While we all tend to look back on the past more fondly, there was something truly magical about the 70s and 80s for British rallying where iconic cars and legendary drivers duked it out on some epic stages. Today it's with great sadness that the motorsport world is remembering one of the greats from that time, as Russell Brookes has passed away at the age of 74.
While having rallied Lotus Sunbeams, 911s, Delta Integrales and Minis in his time, Brookes is arguably best known for his exploits in an 'Andrew's Heat for Hire' Manta 400. So that's what we have here, a few minutes of Brookes at his best to remember a rally driver admired by peers and rivals alike.
It's a highlights video from the 1985 season, when Brookes took his second British title after a sensational year-long duel with teammate Jimmy McRae. To be honest, it's chock full of great cars and drivers, but the Manta's distinctive livery and Brookes' speed is still clear to see - it's a real treat. Have a look here, too, for an interview with the man discussing the period.
That's all a long time ago now, though, a point that Brookes death only puts into starker focus. Still, let's be grateful that the archives give us access to a memorable era in British motorsport history, and one of its best known car and driver combos. Russell, you will be very sorely missed - thanks for the memories.
