Caterham launches relay-style Motorsport Enduro

Caterham is looking to kick-off the racing season this year with a new event called the Motorsport Team Enduro. Taking place on Silverstone's National Circuit on March 16th, it will use a relay-style race format with plenty of potential to create some very unpredictable on-track action, featuring as it does so-called 'Super Teams' comprised of three mixed level drivers in Roadsport, 270R and 310R Caterhams.

This new recipe for racing is designed to provide everyone with an equal opportunity for success, allowing rookies to team up with Caterham Academy experts to create a Le Mans Am class-mimicking structure that should equalise the field. It should also reward the smarter strategists on the grid, since teams can run their drivers in any order, so long as they each complete stints no longer than 30 minutes and meet a minimum run time.

This means drivers and cars of varying abilities will be out on track together, creating potentially one of the most unpredictable formats possible. If a team decides to run its fastest drivers at the start and middle of the race, it could eke out a big lead before the final stint, leaving a team with an opposing strategy the job of closing the gap before the chequered flag.

Caterham Motorsport boss Simon Lambert said this race breaks new ground because, "while there are other multi-class race events out there, this will be the first that sees different class cars come together to race in a relay style race". He added: "It's an exciting opportunity for our drivers to take part and warm-up ahead of another year of exciting racing, while getting to know those taking part in other championships".

PH is of course home to several Caterham Academy competitors (Matt's even competed himself), each of whom we wish the best of luck for the season ahead. Join the conversation on the 2019 championship here.
