No doubt the reveal of Ken Block's new rally weapon of choice - a Ford Escort RS Cosworth, in case you hadn't heard - will rekindle a few fond memories in WRC enthusiasts.
It emerged, after all, in a golden era for the sport. Group A regulations meant proper homologation cars, and the Escort Cossie battled with Imprezas and Celica GT-Fours both on the world's rally stages and Britain's B-roads. It was a tremendously exciting time for rallying, from the perspective of fans and competitors alike, and the Escort - while not as successful as hoped for - was a key car of the time.
So really we need no excuse to feature it as our new desktop wallpaper, though its emergence as Mr Hoonigan's new stage steed does at least make it timely. Combine it with a last hurrah this week for the Escort's distant descendant in the Focus RS Red Edition, and the fast Ford stars are nicely aligned.
This particular picture is from 1993, with Francois Delecour and co-driver Daniel Grataloup leading the Portuguese rally in spectacular fashion. It was the event in which Ford would score its first one-two of the season, Miki Biasion following the Frenchman home to complete a very successful outing for the blue oval. Can the Escort hope to compete in the American national series a quarter of a century later? We'll find out very soon!
