It’s been a week for Nurburgring spy shots so far, with everything from
Kias to Camaros
, and even a selection of
BMWs
jostling for position on the Nordschleife. And today comes news from
Motor Authority
of another new performance car jumping into the fray – Subaru’s
next WRX STI
WRX STI taller and narrower than concept
A quick chat with Subaru this morning confirms that there are still no plans to bring this model to the UK now that it’s
axed the current generation
. According to a spokesperson, the new car will launch in Japan, most likely in 2015, but any official imports to Europe have yet to be discussed. There is, however, a glimmer of hope – “we haven’t shut the door just yet,” said our contact, adding that they will be “monitoring currencies” between now and the launch. In short, then, don’t get your hopes up, but don’t write it off entirely, either.
And as long as there’s still a chance (and a grey import market, of course), we’ll be interested in the new car. If the concept’s anything to go by, it’ll look a cracker, although the spy shots do seem to show a car that’s lost some of its impressive width and gained a bit of height, too. Still, those scowling headlights seem to remain, as do the quad tailpipes and kicked-up tail, here graced with the traditional Subaru spoiler. So while it might be taller and narrower than the concept, it should at least be a better looker than certain previous generations of Impreza.
Impreza styling cues still obvious, though
If you still want to get your hands on one of the
current generation
WRX STIs, though, you’re out of luck – Subaru tells us they’ve just sold out of their UK allocation. Meaning if you want a fun Subaru these days, you’ll have to go for the
BRZ
– or take to the second-hand market, where a
clean, late WRX
with decent mileage, full history and just two owners under its belt can now be had for around the £10,000 mark.
