One way to stop all of these problems in certain threads is to screen those who may post in those areas!

Maybe some form of Litmus test?

I'm a new member and I can see that some of the more prolific posters started to believe their own bullst, some clearly sit on ph 24/7 and some feel the need to have an input even though their input is really not necessary . The guy who posts on every single thread and then moans that his son is somehow distant is probably my favourite "character". His son clearly doesn't know his dad wks over whatever hambites/Welshpork / siberian driver or whoever said on a Internet forum

Is a ban coming my way?

People seem to treat every area as though it were the lounge. Discussions in other areas are often derailed by people posting rubbish jokes and puns, or just being downright unpleasant. There are often threads where someone asks for advice on something to be instantly shot down by someone trying to be clever or funny (eg the second post in this thread).

PH has changed for the worse. It is a less pleasant place these days with more people trying to prove something. It no longer stands out as different from most other forums in the way it did when I first joined.

So true, perhaps it time people started smacking these smart arses down when they do this. This attitude is clearly affecting the site.

We used to support eachother, now we destroy eachother to prove how wonderful we are. It is easier to be negative than positive, and even a simple question can be mocked where once upon a time it would have been discussed intelligently.

If PH wanted to up the level of discussion here they could ban the rolleyes and rofl smilies when used derisively, erasing posts which add nothing to a conversation other than a sneer.

biggrin jokes aside I've only been active on here for the last 3-4 months and I learnt pretty fast through observation that it's near suicide to even start a thread on the forum about anything, anything at all. Even for the most trivial things people just seem to respond in such an aggressive manner that it doesn't seem worth it for the few sensible replies you mgith get.

Noticed that certain people seem to crop up in the same places over and over again 'hanging the rod' as it were. There seems to be a lot of 'in' jokes and cliques that crop up that are generally negative and unhelpful.
I agree with that entirely. Having been here several years myself, I look at some threads and know they have less than a page before the usual suspects - whose specialist subject has come up - ruin it.

Someone else posted about the closed question thing, I couldn't agree more. Some people seem determined to make the OP look as little as possible. It's bizarre.

You're welcome. It just so happened that I'd come upon the term somewhere else recently and so it was all fresh in my napper.

The ones that really annoy me are the closed questions.
This really does irritate me too. Might there be mileage in adding it to the "Posting Rules"? It'd then become a reportable misdemeanour.

What about the strawmen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man
It was impossible to run a thread in SPL without one turning up tumbleweed

Maybe it's a good thing if it shows what happens in real life in the courts smile

Most posters will recognise when somebody is trolling or being deliberately provocative.

The best way to deal with these people is to ignore them. They thrive on attention like a naughty child.

Is there anybody there............ I said............ Most posters....

Mutter mutter grrrrrrrr. I don't know why I bother............ I'm not posting on here again.

See it does work.

I find it amusing that this thread (which criticises posters) has been allowed to run, yet any thread that criticises the mods is immediately closed.

I have been surprised that it's the more established members. Usually I'll read something a bit unpleasant/overly argumentative and look at the poster info on the left assuming that it's just someone new to the forum who maybe doesn't know that there's a certain amount of "netiquette" expected. Then see it's someone who's been here for 4+ years!
