A friend of mine has an Audi A6 3.2 Quattro which has a problem with the timing chain. It is an 05 plate with just 45,000 miles. They have been quoted £3,500 to fix it and now plan to SORN the car and leave it as a security deterrent while they are at work to look like someone is in. It seems a bit sad to leave a fully loaded car (owned from new and all options ticked) to just decay up the driveway so is this a realistic price to fix?

An old topic but some good information. The op in that paid 2100 with audi's help. Your friend should weigh up, if it is really worth it, maybe worth between 4-5k so this would be half the value, so if they could sell for 2.5k with fault might be a better option.

As suggested above they are going to try Audi customer services as it does have FASH. Car is used daily to drive two miles to station and back, is this likely to have damaged engine?
They don't have much knowledge in cars and so have decided it must be worthless and will either be left up drive or scrapped.
They paid £40k for the car new, do you think anyone would buy it with that problem, for example on eBay if it were accurately described? I can't believe it is worthless!

I had this engine in an A3 and had it replaced and a new clutch for less than half of that at 54k miles.
There are plenty of specialist around who will do it for far less than a main dealer, and any specialist will be aware of this work. It is a very common problem with this engine.
They need to shop around and haggle.
Good luck to them.

Different engine. A3 has VR6 engine, A6 has "proper" V6.There are plenty of specialist around who will do it for far less than a main dealer, and any specialist will be aware of this work. It is a very common problem with this engine.

used these guys for our recent cambelt service and they seemed reasonable enough, worth a shout.

A couple of mates managed to get the engine out and in on an s4 in a day to swap the turbos, it was a long day but it was also at home so a proper garage should be able to do it.
I could take the entire front off of my s4 in an hour, only a few more bolts from there
I'm not saying it couldn't be done if they were on bonus and they knew what they were doing . Back in the BMW Nikasil days fitters did so many engine replacements they could do a swap in 6 hrs I was told. The car in the OP's post seems worth saving, what if it had done 100k + and was showing it's age ?I could take the entire front off of my s4 in an hour, only a few more bolts from there
