Without more details there's an enormous number of cars that could meet the criteria. Elise, E46 M3, Caterham, Boxster, R33 Skyline GTR,...?

BMW 335i?

306 bhp standard

375 bhp with a JB4

420+ bhp with uprated turbos, intercooler, exhaust manifold etc. - serious M3 worrier

Monaro, 350Z, Chimaera, Impreza of some sort?

It depends entirely on what your idea of fun is.

S2000, 300ZX, Boxster.
I think that's probably in order of increasing borkfactor..
eta: I misread that as 5k laugh
Get a less-borktastic Boxster then.
Probably get a very nice S2k or 300ZX for that too.
With a Z you could have a bit left for the after-market boost controller or even some bigger turbos.

Really depends on just how much fun you want.

e46 m3 is top of the list but just unsure about the subframe issues

I'm an inch shorter than you OP- Elise is worse than a VX220 for me, my knees interfere with the steering and I can't use the pedals properly.

Given your requirements I'd likely look for a 996 that's had most of the failings addressed. I found a few in the 9.5-12K range when I was looking recently.

M3s are nice but ultimately it's just another BMW IMO (even though that's not a bad thing)

I guess you saw this thread?

In your shoes I'd definitely be test driving some S2000s.

300ZX is getting on so unless you specifically want one probably not worth your effort hunting for a well maintained example with fresh bushes and such.

You could buy an E46 M3 and get the rear subframe mounts pre-emptively replaced for 10k. It's not a particularly huge job, from what I remember when I was looking at them.

Haven't looked at the prices recently, but you might get a tuned Mitsubishi Evo?
